a democracy is a goverment policy which allows its countries peple to choose who to lead them. Opposite of this is a dictatorship where a countrys people are oppressed and can't protest e.g. libya or nazi germany. the nazis were a dictatorship-ww2
The exact meaning of the term "democracy" must be gained from the context in which it is used. When used with reference to a government which is acknowledged to be a republic, it obviously does not refer in practice that it is of the people by the people and for the people in theoretical sense . The democracy is the very foundation of our logical settlement of thoughts wherever it is applied be it the governance of a nation or a corporate or a society it is only a well accepted proposition ,even if we generally feel cynical or critical about it . Just think about an alternative you can hardly find an equitable substitute. DEMOCRACY is only acceptable form of peaceful governance ,the question is only about it's purity we are always concerned with not about it's philosophy , but it's practical application.

Why cant the US have a direct democracy?

The US has a representative democracy because, at the time the Constitution was framed, it was impracticable to have a direct democracy. Additionally, the Founding Fathers were generally skeptical of democracies (since they understood it differently than we did) and feared the tyranny of the majority. They believed a representative democracy would temper the passions of the masses.

What role do people play in a democracy?

In order for a democracy to work, it is important that the people have knowledge about the definition of democracy and how it works. Thus, it is highly important for a country to have an educated population in order for the democratic system to work. This is important because uneducated people tend to lean towards radical ideologies as these ideologies might seem to have a sufficient solution to the problems of the society, however what people usually fail to see or even ignore is that these solution are based on suppression of other groups in society which usually doesn't affect the majority.

Another important point in educating the people about the definition of democracy is that they usually tend to understand the word wrong. An example of that is that many people tend to regard democracy as a system where everything literally is allowed, this often lead to a complete chaos that devastates the order of the society rather than improving it and in that way, it leads to the opposite effect of the aims of democracy.

The Role of the People

The key role of citizens in a democracy is to participate in public life.

Citizens have an obligation to become informed about public issues, to watch carefully how their political leaders and representatives use their powers, and to express their own opinions and interests.

Voting in elections is another important civic duty of all citizens.

But to vote wisely, each citizen should listen to the views of the different parties and candidates, and then make his or her own decision on whom to support.

Participation can also involve campaigning for a political party or candidate, standing as a candidate for political office, debating public issues, attending community meetings, civic meetings, petitioning the government, and even protesting.

A vital form of participation comes through active membership in independent, non-governmental organizations, what we call "civil society."

These organizations represent a variety of interests and beliefs: farmers, workers, doctors, teachers, business owners, religious believers, women, students, human rights activists.

"DEMOCRACY: Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system."

Benjamen Franklin used his printing press and his developed writing skills to express and promote his ideas. He also belonged to the Junto - a group of friends who met, debated, discussed, and traded information.

Should dissent always be expressed peacefully in a democracy?

The first line of attack to improve a government policy should be peaceful protests. There are several reasons for this: (1) Your case becomes more sympathetic since you appear more restrained than the government that is repressing your rights. (2) It prevents a reactionary response that a militant form of dissent immediately creates. (3) It shows that you are open to constructive or compromise solutions as opposed to simply "my way or the highway". (4) Further, and specifically in a democracy, the right of peaceful protest is protected.

What was the role of common people in a democracy?

It depends where they live. In the US and much of the world, they can vote, petition to have laws changed, run for office, audit their government's budget, watch the activities of their government ("Watchdogs"), and protest. If you live in a free country, get involved! See an unfair law? Get it changed through the judicial (a lawsuit for violation of constitutional rights) or get it on the next ballot through a petition. If you live in the US, go to your state's official website to find out how to proceed.

What was Athenian democracy and why is it important today?

Athenian democracy was all adult male citizens meeting in assembly each fortnight and discussed and voted on the running of the state.

It is not important today other than as interesting history, as democracies today are representative democracies - that is citizens elect representatives to he assembly, who vote on decisions. This present system gives power to the representative politicians who often have different views and are held accountable at elections after several years.

The Athenian direct democracy model sounds attractive but most countries are too large for people to assemble regularly, so we have to have representatives to do this for us. The question is 'would you trust a politician?'

When did Egypt become a democracy?

The Revolution against the monarchy occurred in 1954 and succeeded in the same year, bringing the Nasserists to power. They began the process of elections and claimed that Egypt was a democracy, but is important to note that Egypt was typically termed an Illiberal Democracy during this period. While there would be democratic elections often times the results are nullified by the state there would be only one candidate.

Since the Arab Spring Revolution in Egypt, in 2011-2012, Egypt has become more democratic, but SCAF (the Egyptian Army), still holds a lot of power, making the current Egyptian State a hybrid between a democracy and military junta to be resolved with the writing of a new constitution.
