How long do people with bipolar disorder live?

Obviously depending on the seriousness of there BiPolar Case. But anyone with BiPolar can live just as long as someone who doesn't have it. some people take medicine for it or go to counselling. But BiPolar itself can;t kill you. the only way someone with BiPolar couldn't live as long as someone else. is if they killed themselves. there just like everyone else. just with bigger mood swings. and on the plus side many actors, artists have BiPolar because people with the illness are usually extremley creative and have a better understanding of the meaning of life. i know it sounds crzy but it's true. many BiPolar sufferers usually undersatnd the side of life other people don't. that's another reason they make great actors because of there understanding and imagination. A director once said. you don't need to be gay or Jewish be in this buisness you just need to be BiPolar.....

What does it mean when someone is bipolar?

It means having bipolar disorder, which is characterised by periods of mania, ie euphoria and hyperactiveness sometimes accompanied by psychosis, and periods of depression, ie low mood and sometimes suicidal thoughts.

There are three types of bipolar disorder;

Bipolar I; extreme mania, often with psychosis, and severe depression.

Bipolar II; hypomania (ie a less extreme form of mania, often correlated with increased functionality) and severe depression.

Cyclothymia; mild mania and depression.

Can you lose weight on lithium?

i believe so if you drink lots of water and eat only 3 meals a day. by eating less your not satisfying your appetite on lithium. lots of water will not only take care of the water retention but will take care of fat metabolism as well through the liver and kidneys. caffeine or coffee lowers lithium and you get more side effects like weight gain so you better get off it. more important is to exercise to increase the metabolism because lithium blocks or slows down thyroid production. hope this answers your question. cb.

How does Adolescence and mood swings?

Several reasons that mostly involve ever changing hormones. Having a body that is more sexually mature than is needed at the time. One minute feeling (or acting) like a child - the next wanting to be treated like an adult.

The years following puberty are not easy on anyone, you or your parents. Your body changes daily, but your brain is several years behind it. There is a lot of frustration during puberty. But don't worry, we all go thru it, most of us even survive it!

How you can you get out of depression?

When you are depressed, it can feel like there is no way out of your depression, but it is possible to find a way through with a combination of medication, talk therapy, and some lifestyle changes.

First, talk to your doctor, who may recommend a course of antidepressant medication. While antidepressants treat the symptoms of depression, they won't cure it. Research has shown that combining antidepressant medication with some form of psychotherapy is more effective than either alone.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you to identify the thoughts, feelings and behaviors which contribute to depression. It teaches you practical techniques to reframe negative thinking (which frequently accompanies depression) and the skills to cope better with life.

Sometimes writing things down helps you see things in a clearer light and can be a helpful emotional release. Writing in a journal may help help you spot your potential depression triggers and identify what helps/hinders you in coping with certain situations.

Learning how to manage stress in your life will also help you deal with depression. Yoga, tai chi, meditation and exercise all help with stress reduction.

Finally, while you may feel like shutting yourself away from the world, social isolation will only make depresssion worse. If you have a trusted family member or friend, ask them for their support to help you recover. Recovery from depression takes time. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself credit for the progress you are making each day.

Is everyone bipolar?

No, not all women are bipolar. Bipolar is a mental disorder, just like cancer, or having lost an arm. We all have problems but women get mood swings because of PMS, not because they are bipolar.

How do you stop your depression from affecting your job?

It seems unlikely that a job would be the sole source of depression. Is it just your job that makes you feel this way or do other areas of your life produce the same feelings? Many people complain about being depressed when in reality they are just feeling sad, bored, unhappy, dissatisfied, stressed... With nothing more to go on than your original question - and the way it was phrased - I'd guess your problem is one of the above rather than true depression. Below is a list of some of the ''most common'' symptoms used to diagnose depression: *Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells *Significant changes in appetite and sleep patterns *Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, anxiety *Pessimism, indifference *Loss of energy, persistent lethargy *Feelings of guilt, worthlessness *Inability to concentrate, indecisiveness *Inability to take pleasure in former interests, social withdrawal *Unexplained aches and pains *Recurring thoughts of death or suicide If you experience five or more of these symptoms for more than two weeks or if any of these symptoms interfere with work or family activities then it's likely that you suffer from some form of depression. If it only your job that you are unhappy with you may be experiencing burnout, or in need of something more challenging. Start looking for a new job. Maybe a change of scenery, so to speak, will help. Start taking the necessary steps to get a better one - go back to school, or just take a few classes to learn new skills or brush up on the ones you have. I would also seek out a therapist; your family doctor can recommend one. He or she will be able to tell you if you are just suffering a case of the blues or work related stress/anxiety, or if you are truly depressed. Often depression can be treated with therapy alone, no medication needed. But if anti-depressants are deemed necessary, you'll have to decide whether you'd rather live with your condition or whether taking a pill for a while (in some cases even for the rest of your life, as in my own case) in order to lead a normal life is acceptable. The good news is that a large number of people experience one or more periods of depression that eventually go away in a relatively short time. And the sooner you seek help the quicker you can get your life back on track. Women seem to be more susceptible to these bouts of depression. (I don't know for sure, but I suspect hormones have something to do with it - like postpartum depression, for example.) The bad news is that some people suffer from more serious kinds of depression that can be treated but are unlikely ever to be cured. I fall into this category, I've suffered from depression almost my entire life (I'm 37). I think that whomever asked the question already knows the answer. You need to get another job. There are many people who can go to work each day and collect their paychecks and come home and it seems as if they really don't care what kind of job they have. I'm not one of those people! I am a "people person." Also, I'm very good with words and communcation but horrible with numbers. Believe it or not I've actually taken jobs in my life where I was either isolated from people all day in a small office, or where I would enter NUMBERS into a computer. I even had ONE job when I did BOTH! Needless to say, these are the types of jobs where I would leave the office in tears or would start dreading coming back to work the next day on the way HOME! If your job is depressing you, you are probably unsuited for it (and vice versa) and in your heart you know you're supposed to be doing something else. I, too, am 37 and for too many years I listened to people who urged me to take jobs because of higher pay or benefits. I'd make tons of money but would come home absolutely miserable each day. Finally, a few years ago, I took a job that I loved. No insurance. Seasonal with no guarantee of rehire after eight months. And people thought I was nuts. But it was the kind of job that truly brought me personal satsifaction and happiness. I'd breeze through each day and come home HAPPY. I found other ways to supplement my income and even started a small side business because of all of this. Life is too short. Start thinking about the kind of job you would truly love to have and go for it. If furthering your education is involved, then go in that direction first. The job that I loved eventually did end so I had to take another office job temporarily. I recently returned to school after 20 years to pursue a career that I will love! Your job is a huge part of your life. You CAN find something that you enjoy!

A person that suffers from Major Depressive disorder must exhibit a depressed mood or loss of drive/interest/pleasure in their daily activities. This loss of pleasure in daily activities must be consistent for at least a two week period and must be a deviation from the person's normal mood. It must negatively impair important functions in their life such as social matters, educationally and occupational.

These changes in mood are not better accounted for by a sudden traumatic event, such as a loss of a loved one, the symptoms persist for more than two months.

The Diagnostic Criteria (DSM IV) for Major Depressive Disorder is as follows:

* Recurrent thoughts of death and recurrent suicidal ideation, without a specific plan. Suicidal attempts or specific plans for committing suicide. * Persistent fatigue or loss of energy. * Persistent psychomotor agitation. * Persistent indecisiveness, or a diminished ability to focus, think and concentrate. * Significant weight loss without dieting or weight gain (change in more than 5% of the body weight within a month.), also a loss or gain of appetite. * Persistent negative self-concept, feelings of worthlessness or excessive and innappropriate guilt. * Persistent insomnia or hypersomnia, lethargy or agitation. * Feelings of sadness that are out of proportion to the person's life situation. * Loss of interest and pleasure in daily activities.

Psychotherapy (especially cognitive-behavioral therapy of CBT) with or without antidepressant medication is the most common and most effective treatment of depressive episodes.

What is Bi-Polar I and II?

Bipolar 2 is a lesser degree of the illness because the mania is only a "hypomania" where you still have a grasp on reality but you have periods of excitedness, more energy. An example of this form is where you get the urge to read about a certain topic, buy 5 books on the topic and immediately lose interest and find something else to do, on and on.

With Bipolar 1, this is where you cycle from mania, (previously called, manic-depressive disorder) to severe lows, depression. A person in this category can reason highs to the point where they become delusional and feel higher than life and lack good judgment (like thinking you can run off to another country in one day then getting there and feeling absolutely incapable).

-------------------

(Second answerer)

I would like to clarify that the rate of mood swings is not important in determining the difference between Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 disorders. The difference is, as the first answerer said in the difference between hypomania and mania. Hypomania essentially is when there are symptoms of mania but they do not cause significant problems. Mania, by contrast, is when manic symptoms cause major problems such as psychosis (although about half of people who have mania are NOT psychotic, it is one example of a major problem). Other major problems could be excessive spending, excessive desire for sex and a lack of a need for sleep for several days.

Here is an example: I may experience some hypomania myself, and there are times when I only need to sleep for 3 or 4 hours to feel rested. This causes few problems. Somebody with actual mania may not sleep for two days straight by choice.

In either case symptoms of severe depression may be present. In bipolar 2 disorder severe depression is present, where as in bipolar 1 it is all about the mania - depression is optional. In a case of hypomania and mild depression another disorder called cylothemia is diagnosed.

What should you do if a friend is Suicidal?

You first need to talk to an adult about it, or even call the police, because suicide is NOT the answer. You need to be there for your friend, and let him know that you will never leave him and that you want to help. Help him by setting up an appointment with his doctor to see if he may need some medications or not, or even counseling. If he does need that, then offer to go with him :) Write him a note every so often and tell him how much you really mean to him and what good friends you are. Make a deal with him. So you two come up with a plan that you both agree on that when he feels like killing himself, you guys will have a back up plan and an emergency plan if needed. The worst thing to do is leave him alone and then he will feel like no one cares and then he would try and kill himself. We wouldn't want that at all. Do fun stuff together that you really enjoy doing, just the two of you, or a whole bunch of friends, but make sure he doesn't get left out. If he has to take medicine, check in with him to make sure that he is taking it when he is suppose to. All I can say is to just be there for him, and that is the best thing you can do for someone who wants to kill themselves. Believe me, I should know.

Difference between Dysthymia and Major Depressive Disorder?

The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM IV-4E, 2000) is the best, most authoritative source for an answer. The difference is all down to diagnosed symptoms. Legally, only a medically-qualified, registered psychiatrist can properly diagnose psychiatric symptoms and prescribe treatment/s.

The difference between dysthymia and a major depressive episode is a matter of symptoms, severity/duration of symptoms and expert prognosis re healing including via psychotherapy.

How does one cure bipolar disorder?

To get sad is natural! Some times are hormones, sometimes something you do not feel good with. I sometimes feel the same and for no reason I cry but it is natural to feel like that.
