This name is thought to derive from the Nahuatl (Aztec) Xicuahua, or "dry, sandy place" The desert covers most of the Mexican state of Chihuahua as well as other parts of Mexico, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

Most bison are extinct, and only two species are left. One of those species lives only in North America, and the other inhabits Europe and the Caucasus region.

Through the process of desertification, the Sahara is growing rapidly each year.
