Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

How is it possible for more than one male dog to father puppies in the same litter?

The female dog, when she ovulates, releases a number of eggs as opposed to the single egg that a human female will typically produce. Even though each egg will only receive one sperm, the different eggs are not discriminating as to whose sperm that is. For example, perhaps a female dog in heat was impregnated by one male dog and about 80% of her eggs were fertilized. Now, let's say she has an encounter with a different male dog whose sperm fertilize the remaining eggs. Now you've got a litter of puppies with different daddies!

Say your female dog only had three puppies in her litter. Litter sizes will vary every time. This could be due to how many eggs she released, or how many sperm were successful in fertilizing the eggs. The womb is a hostile place to sperm and they do not actually survive very long inside it. If you suspect your litter of having more than one father, I'd be willing to bet it's a pretty big litter also, considering she has a better chance of a higher percentage of her eggs getting fertilized that way.

When did dog fighting start?

so...most people who are studying the origin of dogfighting believe it started in England. This knowledge is based on paintings of dogs that researchers believe look exactly like (old versions) of the modern day Pit-bull. The second reason to believe this is because Bullfighting started in England and it is very similar to dog-fighting. A dog was basically thrown into an enormous ring with a bull, and whoever died first lost. The spectators ranged from the homeless to royalty. I did a project teaching people about why dogfighting is wrong and why the penalties for the dog-fighters should be raised. So...if you have any more question i know of a few good sights that offer a lot of insightful info on the origin and general info.

Why do dogs woof?

(a) Dogs have enjoyed a very long association with mankind, in fact the human-hound relationship is even older than the human-horse one. It has also been established that domestic dogs are the descendant of the wolf. As dogs slowly evolved away from the wolf, it became increasingly difficult for proud dog owners to believe that their beloved pets were actually related to the wolf, who had taken on a (unwarranted) sinister reputation in general folk-lore. One thing that the dog did learn to do, in its attempt to talk to its human masters, was bark! Dogs never lost the original knowledge that they are descended from the wolf, so the very first thing they had to say when they learned to bark was "woof" - as they lack the linguistic ability to pronounce the "l" in "wolf"(it doesn't roll off their tongues). Dogs are actually quite proud of their lupine ancestry, and they have never ceased to remind us of it ever since the first bark.

(b) Dogs Woof because they are earated or want something

What are dog tails?

Dog tails are an extension of their spine and are used for communication and balance. Different breeds have different tail lengths and shapes, and dogs will wag their tails to express emotions such as happiness, excitement, or anxiety. Some dogs are born without tails, while others have their tails docked for various reasons.

Do some dogs mate with cats?

Dogs and cats are different species, and thus cannot produce offspring. Because they are different species, their behaviors when they are ready to breed are different and more than likely would not be recognized by the other. If your dog is mounting (humping) your cat, it is more than like a display of dominance rather than anything sexual. Mounting is one of the many traits that domesticated dogs have retained from their wild fore-bearers and is a way that wolves especially, show dominance in the pack.

What is occurring when dog drops head to floor and stays in that position?

Rabies is definitely a possibility despite the low percentage of dogs that actually get the disease due to vaccinations. It overall means that the dog is extremely sick and should seek veterinary assistance immediately. A stroke is another possibility if the head can only be picked up to a certain point. Hope this helps!

http://www.helium.com/TM/766475/dangerous-breeds-breeds-produced

That is only partially true because different breeds have different personalities for example the terrier family allthough master dominated is agresive and instinctivly chase smaller animals because that what they was bread for. im not saying that there is primary aggressive breed but incertain situations different breeds will react in different ways regardless of there breed.

most dog that have the bad reputations i.e pit bull, staffishire bull terrier etc have the most potential to be dangerouse but are the easyer trained dogs were as at the moment sausage dogs hold the records for most bites, poodles and dalmations also snap alot. I would say that the Yorkshire terrior is another one of the most likely breeds to be agresive (little man syndrome lol). Btw its not true that dogs aren,t natyrally aggressive that's wishfull thinking they share 99.9% of their DNA with wolves they also share the same instincts and behaviour. So they arent made agressiv but if their behaviour/instincts arent corected there primative side may show.

Why don't some dogs have tails?

No, humans do not have tails. During embryologic development the embryo develops a tail, but it regresses prior to the fetal stage of development. However, humans have the last little vestige of the first bone of a tail. This is the coccyx bone and it is fused to the last sacral vertebra in the fused pelvic girdle.

Will mopping a laminate floor with vinegar stop a dog from urinating on it?

No, using vinegar on a laminate floor will not stop a dog from urinating on it. It's important to address the underlying reason why the dog is urinating inside, such as marking territory, anxiety, or a medical issue, to effectively address the behavior. Regular cleaning with an enzymatic cleaner designed to eliminate pet odors can help discourage repeat accidents.
