Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

How do you stop a dog from peeing when she gets excited?

My dog also did that, but then she seemed to get used to me coming home and stopped peeing when she got exited, they skip that stage after a month or too. It also helps if you approach them slowly and not speak until you bend and then pet them

You have to start talking to him before you get to close to him. And actually at five months he's a bit young. They just do that. Make sure you speak in a very gental way. Don't yell or he'll always do that.

Lack of ConfidenceTypically the "excited" urination is just a result of a lack of confidence. Enroll your pup in a puppy preschool class somewhere that specializes in opperant conditioning, clicker training, or kindness training... A class that allows supervised play time off leash, and encourages you to visit with everyones puppies. The more people and dogs he meets, and the more things he learns, the more his confidence will grow. :)

As a trainer I see this on a regular basis, and I see dogs who become confident, outgoing, and much happier as classes go on.

Good luck with your pupper.

Why does your dog rub its nose or chin on the carpet?

His face is itchy, or his teeth are irritating him because they may be crooked.

If the area looks infected/unhealthy/bleeds a lot, then take him to the vet because it may be something bad

I intend to tomorrow if he continues doing it. All the vets are closed until morning. He just started doing this tonight. I'm worried he may have gotten one of his chew bones stuck in his teeth, or maybe one of his teeth is coming out. He won't let me examine the area. ~ CheeseKing

Can your dog understand you?

you might be surprised that a dog can understand humans.by what you say different actions happen to the dog especially well trained dogs. puppies understand too they understand some words at first like ,move, here, stay, walk away and run that is why it is hard to train puppies, while they grow up they understand more words. grown up dogs are easy to train at the (dog ages)16 and 20 when you have a puppy and you run or walk fastly and your puppy follows you that means when your puppy grows up to be a dog it will like walks sometimes when your puppy is now a dog you accidentally say walk it mgiht get jumpy and want to go for a walk and to be sure dogs are really great pets.

What do you do for a dog that is listless but still eating?

It's always best to see your vet for some blood testing to be sure your dog is healthy. If the vet finds nothing then you have to figure it out and here are some causes that will make a dog depressed or listless:

  • If their owner goes to work
  • If their environment is disturbed such as guests staying over or improvements on the house are made.
  • Not enough exercise. It's wise to take quality time to walk your dog and find a park or trail where you can let your dog off leash. Particularly large dogs need lots of exercise. Play ball in the park on a one to one basis with your dog.
  • Arguing in a household also upsets pets.
  • Children mauling a pet will often make the dog listless as they don't like to be constantly annoyed even if they have a great deal of patience with children.
  • If they are not on a feeding schedule or give enough affection. Each dog is different and some dogs are very independent, but I find most need play time, cuddling and 'good dog' and lots of encouragement.
  • Some dogs actually miss their own kind, so you may think of getting a smaller dog if you have a large dog (the two will be fine together.) Mixed breeds such as Cockapoos, Cairn X, West Highlands are all great dogs. I always have two dogs and they are the best of friends. If one has to stay at the vets over night then the other is depressed until the other dog comes home.

Please see your vet first.

It could be any number of things, like Paarvo or Distemper. Take your dog to the vet, regardless of the vaccinations it's had! What does it mean to debark or devocalize your dog?

Debarking, or devocalization, is a controversial surgical procedure in dogs that permanently stops a dog from barking through surgery. Debarking reduces the volume and pitch of a dog's bark making it sound more as if the dog is hoarse or whispering. This is done in response to problematic amounts of barking. Up to 35% of dog owners report problems with barking, which can cause disputes and legal problems that are often considered more important than the individual canines themselves.

The controversial surgical procedure known as 'de-barking' is a veterinary procedure for modifying the voice box so that a barking dog will make a significantly reduced noise. Animal rights organizations have strongly opposed debarking. Those who have the procedure done claim their dogs are non-responsive to other therapies. Imagine for a moment that someone forces you into surgery and takes away your ability to communicate and verbally express yourself. This is what debarking is for a dog. Puppy mills have utilized a particularly cruel and crude method of debarking dogs. ramming a metal pipe down dog`s throats. Animal rights activists have been trying to educate the public about this terrible practice. ***************************************************************

I'm supplying this edit in argument to the aforesaid information, as I have problems with the accuracy of the stated information. Hearing is the least important sense to a dog, so losing the ability to bark loudly won't impact communication. Dogs rely heavily on body language, and even deaf dogs who never learn to bark do very well in multiple dog households. Debarking a dog usually still allows them to bark, it just reduces how loud the barks are and how far the barks carry.

This surgery can literally be a life saver for someone whose dog barks so much that the neighbors are complaining. Owners can face fines, confiscation and euthanasia of the dog if the barking can't be brought under control by other means. Many dogs are problem barkers, and no amount of training, medications or bark collars will stop them, especially if its due to anxiety.

The animal rights activists want to outlaw debarking, but they don't present a solution to the problem presented by the many dogs that will be killed when their desperate, loving owners have run out of other options. This surgery can be a life saver! ----------- I edited both questions in order to reduce the invective that had nothing whatsoever to do with the answer or the objective facts supplied. I think it's fair on the one hand to say that any intrusive surgery should only be performed when medically necessary, as any surgery creates a health risk to the subject. Surgery without good clinical cause is unethical. That said, we live in a world where well-meaning dog owners may be presented with the options of giving up a barking dog or facing legal repercussions that can be quite extensive, and may well force the issue. Putting a barking dog out on the street, admitting it to Animal Control, either voluntarily or seeing the animal seized under court order, or putting the dog down in order to comply with a court order can be the other side of de-barking. I would suggest that, in the case of a choice between debarking an animal, or putting it down, de-barking has met the criterion for medical necessity. In this case, I leave it to the reader to determine which is the greater kindness. ----------------------------------------- i got a better opinion of what to do in this situation. instead of debarking your dog or putting it to sleep because of the barking and the neighbors getting bothered an all... how about you just dont get a dog at all. if you own a pet and you cant control it, best option would be to be petless and that would pretty much keep dogs from being put to "sleep" or being "debarked".
