Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

Why should stray dogs be put to sleep?

Because like the person below me said. It's like killing homeless people. You'd want to give them a chance, not just throw them away because they haven't got a home. Dogs and cats don't choose to be homeless, it's just a sad fact what people can do. People are who to blame when it comes to that. They are living; breathing things too, don't forget that. Homes can be found for them, maybe someone would like to adopt them? That's what animal rescue centres and rescue people are all about.

Sometimes, though, stray animals could be diseased or exceptionally violent and must be professionally euthanised. You still shouldn't kill them, but if you want to help, should probably call someone to get it. It can then be taken to a vet, and if it is ok, it can be taken to a shelter to be adopted.

Why is your dog black?

Because that's just the way they were made to look.

How do you stop a male dog who is not fixed from sniffing at female dogs that are fixed?

They do what comes naturally, and also, when they smell each others behinds it's a way of identification and a quick run-down on the dogs personality traits. However, it isn't the best thing for pet owners to have to put up with. I have a female Bichon Frise and a cockapoo x terrier that is male and both of them have been fixed. I basically train him not to do this. When he starts now I quickly say in a soft, but stern voice and point a finger "NO!" He stops and that's the end of that. I haven't had to do this too many times. It takes persistence, but they get the message sooner or later. Marcy

Does watermelon make dogs sick?

A watermelon is about 90% water. As long as the dog doesn't eat too much seeds, for they may get stuck somewhere along their digestive track, they can eat watermelons. But, since watermelons are mainly made up of water, they don't really contain any vitamins so, like for humans, watermelons aren't very significant for dogs to eat, but they are edible.

How do you stop a puppy from pooping liquid?

my vet for my puppy said that I should give it some white rice with its food

Will 2 female dogs fight if one is in heat?

Yes. Your female dog can become pregnant by more than one male dog during her heat cylcle.

Why has my dog started growling at you for no reason?

Just like humans interacting with each other dogs can get testy with the other dog. It's nothing to be that concerned about, but just tell them to 'cool it.' I just had to break up a growling session between my Bichon Frise and Cockapoo last night. They simply got on each other's nerves. Once I spoke to them and send them to their beds they calmed down and all was well. Be strict, shake your finger, say 'no' in a stern voice. You are the leader of the pack and not them!

When does a female dog get her period?

Dogs do not menstruate like humans do. Instead, they come into estrus ("come into heat/season") about twice a year, once they have reached sexual maturity. This can sometimes be associated with a small amount of blood from the vulva, but it is not truly a period.

Female puppies can reach sexual maturity potentially as early as six months old, although the first season (which is the closest equivalent to "getting their period") is often at about nine months old. You will notice changes in her behaviour at this time, and will probably see several male admirers following her around!

It is important to ensure that no un-neutered male dog, even her brother or father, gets to spend unsupervised time with her when she is in heat, since all "entire" males will attempt to mate with her at this time. If this happens she will most likely become pregnant and her young body will not cope well with this. It is best not to breed from her until she is at least 2 years old.

If you do not intend to breed from her, talk to your vet as soon as possible about spaying - not only does this prevent the birth of unwanted puppies, it will also reduce her chances of getting some cancers and remove the threat of a life-threatening womb infection, called pyometra.

Can mice get scared to death?

Yes. They prefer dim light or no light mostly because they are nocturnal. I had mice at one point and they never liked light. I have a rat now and he doesn't like light either! Hope that helped!

What does it mean when a dog trembles?

Pitbulls shake for a number of reasons,if it is a female she might be going into labour, a young dog recently taken from its mother some times shakes (mine did at first)

a dog that is nervous or scared

but the most common reason is that , the pitbull breed has a thin coat, and they get cold very easilly , so the best cure for that is, a warm blanket and a loving hand,

older dogs or dogs with separaion anziety shake too ect.

How can you show your dog that you are dominant over him?

The idea of dominance is a much abused and misused one. Leadership is a more descriptive term. Leadership is established by control of resources, control of behavior, and stewardship. A common misconception is that one must eat first or go through doors first or hold one's head higher than a dog in order to rank above it. It isn't who goes through the door first that matters, but who DECIDES who goes through the door first. (That's control of behavior.) Violence is not necessary to establish pack leadership. In fact, it is counter productive because it shows the dog that the biggest bully wins. Use your innate advantages to establish your position in the pack, ie your intelligence and your pocket book. See links below. =Other contributors have said:= * Make them sit before you let them go outside or back in. * YOU go in a door way first, dog second. * Make them wait before eating. Take a treat away from him while he is eating it. Then give it back. * Walk on leash. You are in control. Don't let the dog pull you where he wants to go.

How do teach a dog to protect?

Easy, you can't command your dog to protect you, your children, or even your house. If your dog is like mine, just love and take care of your dog like any good trainer, Owner, or Family member would. You need to make sure that your dog is in a happy home and has a family that would take care of Him/ Her with their lifes. Once you show him, He will do the same......

Does a dingo bark or howl?

There is a great deal of conflicting information about this. However, one Australian source particularly close to the purebred dingoes of Australia (see link below) states that dingoes do not bark. They have three distinct types of howl, as quoted on the site:

  • moans
  • bark/howls
  • snuffs

What many sites do not acknowledge is that there are very few purebred dingoes remaining. The dingoes that bark are invariably the result of generations of cross-breeding with domestic dogs.

Do dogs dream?

Yes, it is scientifically proven that dogs dream. All mammals dream. It is a mysterious process as to WHY mammals dream, but we do actually know what they probably dream of. Many experiments have been done that link a rat's daily activities with the brain waves and motions of their dreams. Dreams tend to revolve around searching for food and fleeing from predators. It might have something to do with the brain's need to do maintenance during downtime, rather like when you run a program on your computer that cleans up unused files and maximizes the efficiency of your hardware. It could also be a different kind of wakefulness, where the mnemonic brain creates exchanges with the more primitive brain for a kind of "training session." Nobody really knows. Well, good question. the world may never know, I bet all animals do.

Scientists learned that by observing their Rapid Eye Movement (REM), which also occurs in humans when they dream.

You should not to disturb a dog or any other animal or human during REM sleep. It disrupts the resetting of the brain that is done during that period of rest. It can look a bit upsetting, but just leave them be and they will be fine.

* The dog's leg twitching- running in dream * Whining - scared in dream * Barking - curious of something in dream * Chewing - eating in dream * Howling - mad at something or howling at moon in dream

How do you tell how many puppies a female dog will have?

Well if you had a few litters before you can guess. Maybe when she gets closer to giving birth feel for them and try to count them. Or you could just go the vet and get an ultra sound. Otherwise you don't know exactly. Sorry!! Good luck though! =)

How can you tell if your dog has fever?

If a dog has a fever, it usually is lethargic. To get an accurate temperature you should do it rectally, with a rectal themometer. Dogs norm temp is 101 degrees

actually it varies by breed.... 100.5 to 102.5 are normal. In other words 102 can be OK, too.

How do you keep a female dog in heat away from a male complete dog in the same house?

You go to a hunter's sporting goods store that has hunter "Scents". These different type "Scents" are either used to cover up the human smell or used to lure animals in. The Scent you want to buy is used for dog training or to scare off other animals. The one I use is bottled by "Moccasin Joe Ambush 100% Pure Natural Urine Scents" It is called "Ambush 100% Pure Cougar Urine" I am not a sales guy for Mocassin Joe, any kind of Cougar urine will do. You could go out and collect some yourself if you want. The way you do it is to squirt some of the Cougar Urine on the butt end of your Shih Tzu. Most Scent bottles squirt. It wont hurt your Shih Tzu and it will definitly keep your Lab away from her. I use it to keep neighbors dogs, cats and other animals out of my yard by pouring 1 1/2 Oz. into a hose end sprayer and spray it around the edges of my yard property. I've seen some dogs yelp and run when they smell it. My Silvertip Wolf won't leave the yard either. The only downside to this scent, it may attract other Cougars. 3.Put it on it.
4.Make it stand up.
5.Tell it to go pee.

If this don't work, sorry, you might as well just go swimming in a toilet....

Is it normal for a dog to bleed 5 days after having 7 puppies?

My first question is, what does the blood look like? If it is small quantities, dark brown and not foul-smelling, this is called lochia and is normal. If the blood is red, clotted, in moderate to large quantities (more than a quarter cup) or has a foul smell to it, you should take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.

How do you treat a spider bite in dog paw?

Your best bet is to trap the spider and rush your dog to the vet. Animals get bitten all the time and we don't notice it because it doesn't swell. If you are seeing swelling, you are seeing a reaction... and that would need to be treated. Take the spider with you so the vet knows what venom is in the dog.

How do you know if your dog is mad or sad?

Sometimes dogs become depressed because they lose a companion; often the only treatment for this is time and still being a companion to him. If your dog appears to be depressed, try spending more one-on-one time with him - going for walks just you and him, sitting with him and petting just him, etc. Most dogs eventually realize that they still have a "pack" and are still welcome in it given time.

Are Blue Pit Bulls OK for people with allergies?

Can two male dogs live together?

As long as they are both nuetered you will probably not have a problem. I have one male and three female beagles. I also foster up to four dogs at a time. I've never had a problem with the males getting along. Actually the only dog I have with an aggression issue is a female. I call her Miss Grouchypants. well maybe ts for the best, i mean if you want puppies then maybe not but having 2 male dogs is not a problem.
