Well zebras and donkeys have been cross bred for years, they're called 'Zedonks' or 'Zonkies'. Both of these animals can be crossed on each other, however the hinny is a cross between a male horse and a female donkey and they are sterile so there is no way to add hinny genetics to the cross.

If you want to get a good mule, you can breed different horses with horses with quality's you like, and breed donkeys with donkeys together with quality's you like. Then you can take the donkeys and horses foals and breed them together and make a "good" mule.
