you can find a dragonfly about at noon or in the morning. best when the rain has just stopped.

Some dragonflies lay their eggs in plants, usually in or beside water. They inject the eggs into the plant or make a little slit in the plant and put the eggs in there. Other dragonflies scatter their eggs on open water in ponds and rivers.

Dragonflies (and damselflies) pass through what's known as incomplete metamorphosis (IM). However, because they go from aquatic to aerial, the transformation is one of the more dramatic in the IM insects.

As the larva (or naiad) passes through roughly 10-12 stages as it grows, it slowly develops wing buds. During the phase just before adult emergence, the specialized labium (kind of an extensible arm that can shoot out from under the head to grasp prey) tissues recede into the adult form.

When the time comes to split the larval skin and emerge as an adult, the naiad will climb out of the water onto reed, rocks etc. Once the emergence has occurred, the adult slowly expands its wings and hardens its new skin (exoskeleton) before the first flight. The old larval skin will remain at the emergence site until it is blown or knocked from its base.

I'm not sure....I saw today a big wide dragonfly eating up a tiny thinner one (or so it looked as the wing of the victim was almost coming off and its face being devoured, plus its body was half eaten up.) At first I thought they were making love (as you can see I am no dragonfly expert!!) but upon closer looking I saw the strange movements of the mouth of the bigger one, as if it were swallowing something. also, it was caring the body of the other one and as I said before, the wing looked as if it were about to come off; it was turning in weird directions and hanging loosely to the body of the other one.

I don't know why they do this, but perhaps it could be because they were two males (although the one who ate the other one was MUCH much bigger than him) or perhaps just enjoy the taste of dragonfly?
