Are eastern orthodox icons made of oil or charcoal?

No. The components of most portable Orthodox icons are wood (as a base) covered with linen and then covered with gesso. The paints themselves are usually derived from minerals naturally found in rocks and sands mixed with a medium such as an egg yolk/ vinegar mixture. Some artists are known to have used a "wax encaustic" method, meaning that the pigments were mixed with wax then applied to a properly treated wood panel. It is believed that Saint Luke the Evangelist used this method for his icons of the Virgin Mary, Although a more well known icon using this method is the Savior of Mt. Sinai.

Who created the Catholic church and how?

Catholic Answer

The Catholic faith emanated from God from the beginning of time, and was established on earth definitively from the side of Jesus Christ on the cross outside of Jerusalem when He side was pierced by a spear, around 33 A.D.. Then it was shown to the world at Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit, fifty-three days later. In other words, God created the Catholic Church out of love for men, and He continues to sustain it in existence until the end of the world, again, out of Love.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

The Church is born primarily of Christ's total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. "The origin and growth of the church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the 'wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.'" Sacrosanctum concilium 5) As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam's side, so the church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross. (Cf. St. Ambrose, In Luc. 2, 85-89: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855} 15, 1666-1668)

"When the work which the Father gave the Son to do on earth was accomplished, the Holy Spirit was sent on the day of Pentecost in order that he might continually sanctify the Church." (Lumen gentium 4; cf. Jn 17:4) The "the Church was openly displayed to the crowds and the spread of the gospel among the nations, through preaching, was begun." (Ad gentes 4) As the "convocation" of all men for salvation, the Church in her very nature is missionary, sent by Christ to all the nations to make disciples of them. (Cf. Mt 28:19-20; Ad gentes 2; 5-6)

Why did Eastern Orthodox Roman Catholicism and Islam end up in such close proximity to each other?

The question is meaningless. I presume you mean to ask why are Islamic controlled lands so close to Eastern Europe. The answer to that is because the prophet Mohammed and his successors tried to take over Europe, in their pursuit of world conquest and domination. Little has changed in 1,400 years.

What is the difference between the Greek cross and the church of England cross?

A Greek cross is simply an equal-sided cross, where all of the bars are the same length (+) but there is no such thing as a 'church of England cross'. Protestants, which includes Anglicans, generally use the Latin cross (which has a longer bottom bar) and the Celtic cross (which has a circle in the middle). If anything, the Celtic cross is the most commonly used cross in the church of England, Ireland and Scotland.

However, all of these crosses are considered to be the same in Christianity and have no difference at all, apart from reflecting a person's individual style or cultural expression. All crosses are regarded as being the sign of Jesus Christ and therefore holy.

Austreneland says: Actually, the church of England uses a compass type emblem, or st. George's cross. The difference between Greek and St. George's would be that greek is any color and equal armed, while st. george's is always red on white and the horizontal bar is longer than the vertical one (rather like this -+-) as might be depicted naturally on an ordinary flag

Are there Eastern Orthodox Churches in Egypt?

Yes, mainly in Cairo and Alexandria. The head office is known as the (Greek Orthodox) Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Egypt, and is based in Alexandria.

What do the eastern orthodox church followers believe?

In the year 1054 a major split occurred in Christianity. The churches in Western Europe, under the authority of the pope at Rome, separated from the churches in the Eastern Roman (or Byzantine) Empire, under the authority of the patriarch (bishop) of Constantinople. The churches of the Eastern Empire have come to be known by the collective term Eastern Orthodoxy. The word orthodoxy simply means "correct teaching," or "right belief." The official designation is actually Orthodox Catholic Church to set it off from the Roman Catholic churchThe Eastern Orthodox ChurchAs the Christian faith evolved, its spread was facilitated greatly by both the Roman and Byzantine Empires. Emperors of these powerful nations not only practiced Christianity, but eventually made it the official religion of their states. The result was that the affairs of the church became closely tied to the political affairs of the empire. Leaders of these empires exerted great control and influence over the developing religion. In Rome, the Bishop known as the Pope gradually grew in authority, until he was recognized throughout the western world as the highest authority in the Church. The Orthodox Church is the one Church founded by Jesus Christ and his apostles, begun at the day of Pentecost with the descent of the Holy Spirit in the year 33 A.D.It may also be called the Orthodox Catholic Church, the Orthodox Christian Church, the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, the Body of Christ, the Bride of Christ, or simply the Church. The holy mysteries or sacraments in the Orthodox Church are vessels of the mystical participation in divine grace of mankind. In a general sense, the Orthodox Church considers everything which is in and of the Church as sacramental or mystical. All the bishops of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, no matter their titles, are equal in their sacramental office.Almost two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth and founded the Church, through His Apostles and disciples, for the salvation of man. In the years which followed, the Apostles spread the Church and its teachings and founded many churches, all united in faith, worship, and the partaking of the Mysteries of the Holy Church. The number of independent churches has varied throughout history. Today there are the Church of Constantinople, the Church of Alexandria (Egypt), the Church of Antioch (headquartered at Damascus, Syria), the Church of Jerusalem, the Russian Orthodox church, the Church of Georgia, the Church of Serbia, the Church of Romania, the Church of Bulgaria, the Church of Cyprus, the Church of Greece, the Church of Albania, the Polish Orthodox church, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and the churches of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. There are also smaller autonomous churches in Finland, Crete, and Japan and many in the United States. Many of the churches existed in hostile surroundings. The Russian Orthodox church suffered severe persecution in the past. It was forced to cooperate with the authorities of the Soviet Union in order to function until the restructuring of Communism allowed open worship after 1990. The church in Albania has been outlawed altogether. The members of the churches in Turkey, Egypt, and the Middle East live as minorities amid large Muslim majorities. Eastern Orthodoxy in the United States is represented by almost every national Orthodox body. The Orthodox understanding of the church is based on the principle that each local community of Christians, gathered around its bishop and celebrating the Lord's Supper, or Eucharist, is a local realization of the whole church on Earth. This concept of wholeness is called catholicity. This may seem an abstract concept, but what it means essentially is that everything necessary to be a church is found in the local congregation. The idea of catholicity may be compared to a loaf of bread. Each single slice is not the whole loaf, but each slice has all the ingredients necessary to be bread. Hence, wherever a bishop and congregation are gathered together, there is the church.Eastern Orthodoxy considers itself the bearer of an unbroken living tradition of Christian faith and worship inherited from the earliest believers. Its beliefs are based on consistency with the Bible and tradition as expressed in the ancient councils---the seven ecumenical church councils that took place between 325 and 787. The churches also accept the decrees of some later councils as reflecting the same faith.Countries and how many people are Orthodox and who is in that country; The Orthodox worship God in Trinity, and honor and venerate the Saints and ask their intercession before God. Of the Saints, the Mother of God holds a special place because of the supreme grace and call she received from God. According to the canons of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, we venerate the sacred icons and relics not in themselves, but as representations of God and the Saints. The Churches SplitDuring the A.D. 700s the church in Rome faced serious challenges. The Roman Empire had fallen, and with it, went the protection that the powerful emperors had given the Catholic Church. The region was now under constant attack from the Germanic tribes of the North. The Pope in Rome sought help from the emperor in Byzantine. When the emperor refused to provide the needed help, the Pope was forced to look to a Germanic tribe that had been converted to Christianity. The lack of help from the Byzantines created resentment in the hearts of those in the West who practiced Roman Christianity, that would last for centuries. In A.D. 1054 the division of the church in the East from the church in the West had become so deep that the two churches were essentially functioning as separate organizations. A conflict between the Pope in Rome and leaders of the church in Constantinople was the last straw. The Pope excommunicated members of the church in the East, while leaders of the church in the East excommunicated the Pope, and members of the church in the West. Both churches claimed to have the authority of God behind them, and to be the original church of Christ. The church in the West became the Holy Roman Catholic Church, while the church in the East became the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Hope this helps u!!!!!!!

Are nurses allowed to marry?

yes

Unless you meant nuns.

Nuns are not allowed to marry because they devote themselves to God.

Does the Eastern Orthodox church believe in Justification by faith alone?

No, because the Bible tells us that faith by itself, without works, is dead. (James 2:17-20).

Faith alone cannot save a person. Both faith and good works are required. (James 2:14).

But then you can't build a doctrine on verses from one book. So you have to compare the book of James with other books in the Bible. If you do that then you will see that justification is by faith in Christ as a the lamb of God.

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Rom 3:24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Rom 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

Galatians 2:16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Galatians 2:16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

Ephesians 2:9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Philippians 3:9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

etc.

Why are western Easter and orthdox Easter different?

Easter is calculated to follow the Jewish feast of Passover. The Jews use the Jewish calendar to calculate when Passover should occur.

Catholics and most Protestants use the new Gregorian calendar decreed by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to calculate the date of Easter.

The Orthodox Church uses the old Julian calendar introduced in 46 B.C.E. by Julius Caesar.

As long as you celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, does the exact date really matter?

What is the difference between Eastern Orthodox and Western Roman?

Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics used to have many differances, but today those differances are not as great, primarily because of the changes made in the Roman Catholic Church.

The two churches started as one, but the Catholics Split from the faith, they believed that the word of God (the Bible) was reserved for the elite and upperclass a group which was gifted in the teachings of Latin. Thus Latin became a language of the church, while in Eastern Orthodox Philosophy, God was available to all and should be presented in the most common language (usually Greek but it differed from region to languist region) So that was the first major difference.

Second, the Catholic Church does not believe in following th Hebrew calendar to determine Easter, even though Jesus's crusifixion date is so intertwined with Hebrew Passover. Catholics and western cultures believe that Easter will always be the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. While Orthodox christians believe it will fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox AFTER PASSOVER which is in concurance with the Hebrew Calendar.

Third, the Catholics believed in the salvation of certain traits, i.e wealthy donators so indulgences and often repentance as a form of Godly currency was often used (such as 20 Hail Mary's for a sin of Gluttony) While Orthodox Christians do have confessions, they are not nearly as public with a priest as they are with God.

The Idea of the Father vs the Leader, in Catholic tradition, the priest leads his congrigation facing away from the Altar and towards the congrigation, while Orthodox priests tend to invision themselves as part of the flock by facing their back to the people.

Finally one of the most controversial aspects is marriage. Orthodox Priests permitt marriage (only before they are ordained) while Catholic Priests do not. So an Orthodox christian can marry then become a priest (but they cannot be a priest then become married).

Why do Orthodox Christians light candles when entering the church?

As a sign of faith in the saints and in Gods heavenly power. Also symbolic of Jesus being the light unto the world, that we (through faith) can also illuminate the world by joining together with fellow Christians.

What types of orthodox churches exist?

Russian orthodox. Greek orthodox. Coptic orthodox. Antiochia orthodox. Eastern orthodox. Ethiopian orthodox.
