Is the Orthodox Church older than the Catholic Church?

The question is not fully correct, ill explain why?

The Orthodox Churche(s) and the Roman Church both have apostolic succession therefore they are the same age and can trace their roots to christ.

However the Catholic Church wanted to change doctrines, traditions, litrugy etc so they changed the original church and continued to add extra doctrines after the 1054 schism e.g pugartory, immaculate conception etc

but the Orthodox Church hasn't changed anything or added any extra doctrines after the 1054 schism.

So concluding the Orthodox and Catholic church are equally old but the Orthodox church is older in tradition, beliefs etc

How much time between Adam and the birth of Jesus?

The time between the creation of Adam and the birth of Jesus was 4097 years. The 3 wise men found him 3 years later in 4100, but the calendar date did not change to 1 AD until much later, by biblical scholars. The conception of Jesus by Mary and Joseph was 12/25/04 BC ACCORDING TO KABBALAH NUMEROLOGY, and the birthdate of the baby most Hebrew scholars call "Jesus ben Joseph" was 9/11/03 BC, PROVEN BY BIBLICAL SCHOLARS AND NUMEROLOGY. Therefore, all of the timelines of generations in Genesis from Adam to Jesus go back 4100 years, to 01/01/01 AD, when the 3 wise men came to see if this boy could be the Mashiach. When they got there to meet him, at age 3, and they realized he would be a good teacher but not the Messiah, they told Joseph and Mary to escape to Nazareth, so that he would not be found and killed by the Romans like the other 3-year-old boys. So Jesus of Bethlehem became "Jesus of Nazareth", which is the vibration of a good teacher, but not the Messiah. Use the calculator and look in Genesis and do the math and it adds up to 4100 years between BC and 1 AD. Adam-of-Eden adds up to 41. 'Eve' adds up to 41. 'man-and-woman' adds up to 41. Adam and Eve were created in 4100 BC. 'LIFE ON EARTH' adds up to the vibration of 41. Based on the creation of man and woman in the universe, the years went from 4100 BC to 1 AD, and they can go from 1 AD to 4100 AD. CAN WE LIVE THAT LONG? ONLY GOD KNOWS FOR SURE...

What led to the split in the Christian Church in 1054?

The split of Chrisianity 1054The title of Pope was not used until the fourth century; until then the title was "Bishop of Rome." The first papal see was traditionally the Apostle Peter, who had been martyred in ROme in AD 67. It is from this that the popes claimed the authority of represtenting Christ in the Chruch, becoming the rulers of all Christendom. For the frist five centruies of Christianity the bishops of Rome ahd shared the leasership of the Church with the other bishoprics in the Eastern Empire, but as these ancient churches were lost to the spread of Islam, Rome found itself at the center of the Chirstian Church. The first significant pope was Leo I (440-461), who successfully deffened Rome from Attila "The Hun" and the Vandlas. He was later follwed by Gregory I (590-604), who reformed the systems and ritual of the Church and who gave his name to Gregorian chants. The Church, now led by the papacy, became stronger in part due to the churches placing themselves under Rome's protection from either the growing Frankish Empire or the comtinued threat of Islamic incasion. The other major center of Chirsianlity was at Constantinople, where the practice of worship had begun to differe from that of the western Christians. in 1054 Chrisitanity separated into two sitinct froms, Catholic in western Europe and Orthodox in parts of eastern Europe, Russia and Near Asia. Doctrinal ReasonThe filioque dispute; in the West at (I think) the Council of Carthage the word filioque, meaning "and the son", was added to the Creed of Nicea to emphasise the dual progession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the son. This was done to highlight the destinction between orthodox Christianity and the hetrodox Arian sect that was very powerful in Visigothic Spain.

The Eastern Church was unaware of this addition at the time as Carthage was not an Ecumenical Council and it became a block to the unification of the Patriarchates of the East with that of the West.

List three ways that the Roman Catholic Church differed from the Greek Orthodox Church during the early Christian era?

During the early Christian era, before the Great Schism, the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church did not exist as separate entities - there was only a Church that is now called the Catholic-Orthodox Church. Nevertheless, there were differences between the two sections of the one Church:

  1. The western Church, which was later to become the Roman Catholic Church, used Latin, while the eastern Churches used Greek;
  2. The western Church celebrated Easter at a different time of year than the eastern Churches.
  3. The bishop of Rome regarded himself as of higher standing in the Church than the other Metropolitans of the Church;
  4. The eastern primates generally had more autonomy from decision of the emperor than did the bishop of Rome.

Who was the eastern orthodox church leader or authority?

There is no such thing as a Western Orthodox Church. The leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church (in either the East or the West) is called a Patriarch or an Archbishop. There is no one leader, such as the pope in the West, but each country or region has its own leader.

What are the three promises in the creed to all christian believers?

1) that He will come again in glory (ie. from heaven, not on earth) to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end

2) that all the dead will be resurrected

3) that there will be a life of the age to come.

What do eastern orthodoxy believe?

This is known as the Nicene Creed. It is a statement of the Orthodox Faith. We believe in one God, God the the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, True God of True God; begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were created.Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and became man; and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose from the dead, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, in His glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. Yes, We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. We confess one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the coming ages. Amen

Does The Orthodox Church ordain women?

Almost no. There is only one way for woman to be ordained as priests (crazy right but bear with me) The only way for woman to be ordained is if the Pope actually decrees that woman are able to receive ordination. Thing is there's alot in the bible that goes against such an idea, so the likelyhood is slim to none.

What are the 3 major divisions of Christianity?

Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant are the three main divisions of Christianity.

Can a divorced man married by orthodox priest marry again by an orthodox church?

Yes. While the Church does not encourage divorce, it allows a divorced person to marry again in an Orthodox Church, although the service is slightly different. You may need to check with your priest to see if you first need to obtain an ecclesiatical divorce, which is separate from a civil divorce.

The Holy Scripture of the Orthodox?

The Holy Scriptures are a collection of Books of the New Testament that come out of the Holy Tradition (the unwritten and oral tradition) of the Early Christian Church. The Bible did not just appear out of thin air.

At the time when Jesus Christ established His Church in Jerusalem in 33 AD, there was no Bible, but only the Old Testament scriptures. So for the first years of its existence, the Church had no New Testament Scriptures at all, and for the first 500 years, there was no printed Bible as we have today. Most people could not even read or write at this time and there was certainly no printing press. They would hear the Scriptures and hold the traditions they were taught (2 Thess 2:15). Christ says "blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it" (Luke 11:28).

So the Holy Scriptures that we know today came to us very slowly and over many decades and centuries from the oral tradition of the Orthodox Church. In fact, it was not until the Fourth Century that St Athanasios of Alexandria wrote his famous Easter Letter in the year 367 AD that identified and "canonized" the 27 books of the New Testament that we all still use to this day.

The Orthodox Church has always used the same Holy Scriptures from the very beginning, as it is the continuation of the living Apostolic Tradition that was handed down by the Holy Apostles. Then the Church split into what we now call Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics in 1054 AD. Then, many centuries later, Martin Luther led a protest movement against the Catholics and formed his own "protestant" group in 1517 AD. From that year onwards, all the other thousands of protestant groups sprang up in many places of the world. But all these groups use the same Bible and the same Holy Scriptures that the Orthodox Church established from as far back as 33 AD in oral form, and from 367 AD in written form.

Why did the Eastern Orthodox Church break away from the Church at Rome?

The original church was called the Catholic Orthodox church or Universal Truth. The Greek orthodox church and Roman catholic church split in 1054. It was mainly the Roman Catholics fault since they changed the original creed which they agreed upon in the first NICENE COUNCIL and claimed papal infallible over the other patriachs.

Hence the name pope of Rome rather than patriach of Rome.

How did the Crusades help solidify the split between the Eastern and the Western Churches?

The Fourth Crusade in 1204 AD resulted in the sack of the Eastern Orthodox City of Constantinople by the Roman Catholic crusaders. This increased tensions and caused enormous damage in relations between East and West and solidified the split that happened 150 years earlier in 1054 AD (the Eastern Schism).
