Will a home pregnancy test detect a ectopic pregnancy?

Yes, it will.

I don't know who wrote that it will.... ^

". Ectopic pregnancies don't always register on http://wiki.answers.com/0_home-pregnancy-tests_2029.bc, so if you suspect there's a problem, don't wait for a positive pregnancy test to contact your caregiver."

source: babycenter.com

you could have an ectopic pregnancy and the test won't pick it up because your hormones aren't rising like they should so the at home test wont pick anything up..

(I don't understand why people put answers when they don't know everything. I'm not a doctor or anything, but you can find out true facts on real credited resources... so at least research something before you go and write your opinion.)

What is an ectopic pregancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the baby starts to develop outside the womb (uterus). The most common site for an ectopic pregnancy is within one of the tubes through which the egg passes from the ovary to the uterus (fallopian tube). However, in rare cases, ectopic pregnancies can occur in the ovary, stomach area, or cervix.

An ectopic pregnancy is usually caused by a condition that blocks or slows the movement of a fertilized egg through the fallopian tube to the uterus. This may be caused by a physical blockage in the tube.

Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

  • Pain in the lower abdomen, and inflammation
  • Pain while urinating
  • Pain while having a bowel movement
  • External bleeding is due to the falling progesterone levels.

Ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilised egg implants itself within one of the fallopian tubes rather than within the uterus, as the embryo grows it outgrows the small space of the fallopian tube and if not caught soon enough this can prove fatal.

Is it possible to have a 5 month ectopic pregnancy?

Hello Yes, I am afraid that there is - I have just been through this. I had a 'normal' first 11 weeks of pregnancy with no bleeding or stomach pains - I did have sickness but I thought this was normal pregnancy morning sickness. At 10.5 weeks I suddenly got some bleeding (light) and stomach pains like period pains. I had a scan 2 days later and they discovered - after some investigation - that it was ectopic although I had not had the typical symptoms. I had a laproscopy when I was excately 11 weeks. I don't think my story is typical but it can happen. Julie L. Oxford.

How long does it take for a tube to burst in case of ectopic?

I had a 12 week ectopic pregnancy in '04. I had been experiencing pain for 4 weeks prior, saw 3 doctors who blamed my pain on GI issuess, etc. I finally went to my parents geriatric doctor who did a pelvic and sent me for ultrasound. I was sent immediately to the ER from the ultrasound for a ruptured ectopic. Rupture time varies from woman to woman but I was told that I was very lucky to be alive considering the shape I was in and how long I had been experiencing the pain. I lost the right tube and ovary but went on to become pregnant again in 07. The pregnancy only lasted 25 weeks due to incompetant cervix but the baby is fine and now I'm DONE with pregnancy for good! ;p I'm not tempting fate anymore.

Can you get a negative pregnancy test your entire pregnancy?

It is possible but not likely. There could be a few possibilities. It was not a very accurate test. You did not do it right. Or it could be a little to early for the particular test you took, and the hormones are not in your urine. A store bought pregnancy test will not defintely tell you if you are pregnant in the early months only a trained professional can.

When does your stomach begin to show signs of pregnancy?

It's different for everyone. For me it was in mt fourth month I started to show. Most women can tell themselves by about 14-15 weeks but it may be another few weeks before other people notice, particularly if you have very good muscle tone, or have a fat layer covering the area.

Is pain like a pulled muscle on your left side a pregnancy symptom?

Not that I'm aware of, but have it checked out. It sounds like it could be apendicitis. It's not appendicitis. I get it on both sides it's just more noticeable on my left side. Big difference btwn this pain & that kind of pain. Thank you for your reply I appreciate it. Anyone else have any idea if this is a pg symptom? Or, anyone who is pg ever experienced this? I plan on testing on Friday if my period does not show up by then. I had the same thing happen to me with my 1st daughter. I actually went into the emegency room for a pain on my left side that would not go away. They took a pregnency test and it came back positive Yes, I hear it is quite normal. Your pg body is doing alot of shifting & stretching to accomodate the little one inside you. However, if it becomes too painful or, does not go away then you should call your Dr. right away. Pulling pain on your side is definitely a symptom, it occurs because the uterus is stretching to get ready for the baby.

The sensation you are feeling is caused by your ligaments stretching. You may often feel this when you change positions while lying down or getting up abruptly. It sort of feels like your ovary is twisting.

Thank you all for your replys to my question. It is indeed a indication of pregnancy. I took a test 3 days after asking this question & it was very much +. I am now almost 12 weeks along. Your appendix is on the right side of your body so you can rule out appendicitis Sharp pains are a sign of pregnancy, it was one of my first signs this time with #4. My pains are on both sides, I have heard that sharp pain on one side is a sign of tubal pregnancy, which if left undetected can cause your tube to rupture. Could just be nothing but I would at least check with my doctor if the pain is one sided. It may also be an ovarian cyst that comes and goes. an ultrasound can confirm that for you. Warning! I had the same thing. It felt like a bad cramp and got worse around my abdomen area. I was rushed to the hospital but in face it was my right ovary and they had to remove it. The blood supply tube to the right ovary twisted and swelled up my ovary. Please, if it gets worse, go to the hospital, as the ovary will die after 1 day while twisting. Lower your stress and do not wear any tighly buttoned jeans. I have the same pain and am a little concerned myself. I took a PG test and it was neg., but I think I took it too early. I am showing every other sign of being PG, though. I think the best thing to do would be to schedule a Dr. apptmt. as soon as you can get one to be sure that everything will go smoothly. I'm sure you are fine, though. Good luck! CONGRATS!!!

What is ectopic pregnancy bleeding?

for Me, I bled so much and there was tissue in the blood as well. My Fallopian tube ruptured from the growth of the fetus. I was bleeding internally for a week. I thought I had my period but once I noticed that my flow was still extremely heavy and at a constant I was a little concerned but oblivious. After it was a week and still bleeding, I knew something was up. I got myself to urgent care when I saw that I was bruised around my belly button and couldn’t have bumped myself to cause it cause I was lying in bed for two days in pain. I thought I had menstruation cramping.

Signs of an ectopic pregnancy?

The first warning signs of an ectopic pregnancy are often pain or vaginal bleeding. You might feel pain in your pelvis, abdomen, or, in extreme cases, even your shoulder or neck (if blood from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy builds up and irritates certain nerves). Most women describe the pain as sharp and stabbing. It may concentrate on one side of the pelvis and come and go or vary in intensity.

Any of the following additional symptoms can also suggest an ectopic pregnancy:

  • vaginal spotting
  • dizziness or fainting (caused by blood loss)
  • low blood pressure (also caused by blood loss)
  • lower back pain

What type of pain do you experience from ectopic pregnancy?

I have just recovered from laparascopic salpingectomy. From the vast amount of literature I've read, the degree of pain in ectopic pregnancies can vary from none at all to severe. I had a positive pregnancy test on the day my period was due and assumed that all was well (as I had two previous healthy pregnancies) until the following week when I had some very slight brown spotting. I had had some persistent abdominal pain, particularly to the right of the belly button but had assumed it was the uterus 'stretching' to accomodate a growing baby. We went to A&E on a Saturday morning where we were sent to the early pregnancy department expecting to be told to go home and ensure I got plenty of rest. Blood tests revealed the pregnancy was not progressing as it should however we were sent home as I was clinically well enough. Bloods were monitored for a week every 48 hours. I had cramping and light to moderate bleeding on the Monday but this had stopped by Tuesday afternoon. The next Saturday I had excrutiating pain that felt like really strong contractions but no bleeding. The last blood taken on the Sunday revealed that the HCg levels had risen quite significantly and the doctor called that evening to ask that I be admitted either that evening or the next morning. As the pain was bearable we decided to go in the morning. Unfortunately the pain in my right side became very severe, very quickly that evening around the belly button area and radiating downwards - I couldn't believe how quickly the pain worsened. Twice I almost collapsed as I felt really dizzy/faint - I had a real panicky sense that something was just very, very wrong. We went straight to the hospital and 45 minutes later I was in theatre. My advice is that if you feel you may have an ectopic pregnancy, don't wait for the pain to worsen to confirm it - ectopic pregnancies can be fatal and the sooner they are detected the better.

How will it take to get pregnant after a tubal pregnancy?

No, in a tubal ligation, the doctor puts a tiny clip on each fallopian tube. This procedure essentially blocks the path of the egg to the uterus. The inside of a fallopian tube is small, literally just a few hair's widths in diameter, to begin with so the likelyhood that a woman would get pregnant "easily" after a tubal ligation is slim, although not impossible.

Can you still have a tubal or ectopic pregnancy with a negative test result?

just wondering if you have a tubal litagation done and have been having regular periods than dont get one and is a week late with severe back pain and bilateral side pain, and constantly going to the bathroom what this means. if you did a home pregnancy test and it came back negative and have a history of them coming back negative until your second trimester can you still be pregnant with maybe an ectopic or tubal pregancy.

Does a pregnancy test read negative when you have a ectopic pregnancy?

an ectopic pregnancy has the same symptoms and signs as a regular pregnancy and you still develop the hormones you would with a normal pregnancy. The human chorionic gonadotropin levels are what cause the pregnancy test to read positive. All pregnancies have hcg levels that should be doubling every other day in early gestation.. an ectopic pregnancy may test negative if taken too early, or too late because the body will eventually,(around 6-11 weeks) begin to try to expel the pregnancy when hormone levels begin to drop when the fetus is no longer viable and must be removed

Hope it helps!

Can a baby live from an ectopic pregnancy?

Unfortunately, not often. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg is implanted outside the womb, but there have been babies, in extremely rare situations, where a healthy baby has been born. Most recently a baby weighing 6 pounds 2 oz. was born in Australia, the sonogram that was done mid-way through the pregnancy did not reveal the ectopic pregnancy. The doctors did not know until they started the cesarean. Most cases do not end this way, and the mother and baby's life can be at risk.

Can ectopic pregnancy be positive on urine test?

Certainly! An ectopic pregnancy is not a condition that affects your reproductive organs such as endometriosis. You have a 1 in 2 chance of conception if you had no problems prior to your ectopic pregnancy. About 60% conceive successfully after an ectopic pregnancy and about 30% choose not to try conceiving again. If you do conceive successfully after having an ectopic pregnancy, it is important to notify your doctor at the first visit of this so that he/she can pay special attention to any warning signs and help you and your baby have a successful future pregnancy.
