Teacher immediacy is the term used to describe communication behaviors that reduce the perceived distance between teacher and students. And before she/he leaves, say, "screw you. And I hate you! Goodbye!"

* I'm a teacher and I'm not afraid of the "gansta"-type kids. They are kids. Some of them try to be big and bad and it is usually because someone has hurt them bad and they figure adults don't get respect until they earn it. I spent 12 years teaching and always loved my hoods and many of them still keep in touch. Lots are no longer hoods and even they think those days are nuts.
There are a lot of teachers, though, that are afraid. Just like anyone or anything else, it is different than what they know. If we talked that way to parents, we would have been in so much trouble. The lack of authority is something hard to deal with if the teachers don't take the time to see that the kids, for the most part, are just looking for someone to care. I know a few teachers, I'm sorry to say, who think that "those kids" should just be kicked out and they treat them horribly. They shouldn't be teachers at all.
I think all kids need to remember, though, that school is a place for kids to be safe and for some kids they aren't safe any place else at all. If all a teacher can do is spend their time getting kids quiet, when do you have time to get to the good stuff that can make a difference. If you are one of those "gansta" kids, give your teacher a break some time and see if it changes. * Everyone is afraid of violent people. Also, teenagers have less self-control than adults, so they are less likely to stop and think before they lose their temper and attack someone; this is why there are so many "gangstas" in jail. Gang members encourage each other to be violent, and have been involved in many gun battles where innocent people were killed as the gangsters shot it out. Teenagers often join a gang to try to feel that they are part of a group. A gang, however, is not a healthy kind of group, but a violent and criminal way of life that is usually hard to escape. These things make non-violent people worried, and sensible people do watch out for "gangstas."
