Where did the African Elephant lived?

The Elephant Bird (Aepyornis maximus)

They are extinct as of the 17th century. But prior to their perpetual absence, they lived and roamed the great plains of Madagascar, a large island off the east coast of Africa. This feathered beauty was the largest bird to ever live (in comparison to known ancestors) and is the cousin of present-day ostriches and emus. With massive legs and claws, and vestigial wings that bore no purpose other than to designate it as a proper bird, it would not have been a very swift and speedy runner. Standing about 10 ft (3 m) tall, it was among the largest animals and likely the head of the Madagascan food chain. They were later drawn out to extinction by the increase of human occupation and exploration of the island, and the removal of the large birds' similarly large eggs.

How does the African elephant parent its offspring?

Once the baby is born, within two days it is ready to start travelling. The mother, aunt and it's sisters will all help to care for it until it is strong enough to look after itself. The herd will not travel fastly so it can keep up. The mother shows it what plant are edible or not. The baby will pretty much learn from the rest of the herd. At birth the baby elephant while will wiegh about 105 kilograms. The mother and her sisters ( if she has any ) will take care of the new born until it is ready to take on the wild by itself. The mother only stays with her baby for about two weeks and then its learning time ( how to hunt, run and protect itself from other animals ).

Even without a full carcass, people can get a very good idea of what an animal looked like by examining fossil bones.

Why are elephants dying out?

Because of two main reasons:

  1. Hunting & Poaching - Trophy Hunting and Ivory Poaching is the main reason for the decline in numbers of African elephants. There were once millions of these animals and now only a few thousand survive
  2. Habitat Loss - As human numbers grew, people started settling into forests and that has also affected elephant populations.
  3. This species is currently considered "Vulnerable", not endangered.

Over all the species is classified as vulnerable, in some places, such as southern Africa, the elephant populatino has recovered. However, the forest elephant is disappearing rapidly, and there are countries where the elephant is severely endangered, as well as some countries which no longer have elephants (i.e. they are locally extinct).

Given an opportunity - Yes. But it is unlikely that a lion pride can hunt and kill a full grown elephant.
