Even though he had been educated by Jesuits , he realised like so many others , that most of "religion" is comprised of needless traditions , silly customs , terrible injustices {I mean it was mid 17th century} ridiculous superstitions etc ... You could say he saw through the sham , the scam , of priests who promoted GOD & Jesus to keep themselves in gainful employment , and kept the Church monstrously wealthy whilst millions died of starvation . He was disillusioned , though intrigued !

Because Volty babes as a practical logical human being , couldn't understand WHY WAS RELIGION SO SUCCESSFUL {seeing how it was so cruel} to him it was a PHENOMENON . Which he tried to fathom , he studied "metaphysics" ,the "bible", he tried to make sense of it in his time , he "reasoned" GOD , now you could say that he was an atheist , but in doing all of this Volty babes discovered a concept that made western Europe , that made Great Britain what it is today , the difference between CHURCH & STATE !

Previously the CHURCH clouded its power , as in how far it could exercise power in running the country , which the concern really of those in Government . Volty babes realised it doesn't matter if your a christian , Jew , Hindu or Buddhist , so long as you did your job , the nations wheels of operating civilization continued . But the CHURCH wanted to run the country on CHRISTIAN principles especially those that added to the wealth of the church.{Its like what IRAN is today}

How I would characterise Volty babes views on religion is by giving you a small thesis in history LOL from the mid 17th century , what his world was like , and why even today in he 21st century , we consider him a gifted writer/scholar & a forward progressive thinker . His views on religion , are in context to how the Church operated in the 17th century , but now in the 21st century with the rise of humanitarian sciences , the irrationality of Church has somewhat declined , & its humanity has increased.This has only been possible , because of people like François-Marie Arouet
