How do you know if your puppy has fleas?
Generally fleas will bite people on the ankles or if your children are playing on the floor they may have tiny, pink, itchy bumps that go away fairly soon. These are flea bites. Fleas love to hide in the corners of rooms, so when you vacuum (should do this every single day) use the proper wand and go to every single corner of the room, under the cushions of your sofas too. I will generally put a flea collar in the vacuum bag. I only do this if the fleas are out of control. If all else fails then you'll have to get an environmentally safe exterminator in (I had to do that 8 years ago.) This year the fleas in British Columbia seem to be at an all time low since we've had rather cool and wet summer. You can also get 'Program' from your vet to put on your dog and cat. It's a small capsule and goes by the weight of your pet. Just snip of the end of the capsule (has a small point on it) and with your thumb (between the pets shoulder blades) put the contents onto the skin. You don't need to rub it in. It works very well and there seems to be no ill side effects to your dog or cat. Dogs that scratch all the time don't necessarily have fleas. Sometimes the warm weather, or even winter months of being in a heated house can cause their skin to itch. When you bath them use Oatmeal Shampoo and then rinse off. Sometime I found out from my vet recently, is that there is no such thing as a 'season' for fleas and they have become 'super fleas' and can go on through the whole year. I was stunned to learn this and thought only the warm summer days of summer created the problem.
How do I get rid of fleas in my house?
== == * Borax, a powder detergent you can find in any grocery store, works well. Sprinkle it in your carpets and floors, leave for the better part of a day and then vacuum. It's messy, but it kills fleas. == == * Call an exterminator for the fleas in the house, get a pet collar for your dog/cat and spray the yard regularly. == == * An exterminator told me that fleas like corners of a room or near the base boards, so either get that Borax in there or call an exterminator. In Canada we have "Program" which is a little capsule that you put on the skin of a dog and cat's skin. Go to the vet and know the weight of your pet and they will give you the proper dose. Then take the capsule and snip the top off and push back the hair in between the shoulder blades of the dog or cat and there is no need to rub it in. You have to do this once a month for as long as the flea season lasts and if you are not sure how long that is you can always check by phoning your vet at no cost. The old saying, "Where there is a cat there are fleas." So, ALL pets must be treated at the same time with Program. I have two dogs and a cat and this is what I use. Works like a charm. Even people that go out on their own grass to mow the lawn or if kids are playing outside can bring the fleas into the house. If you have an extremely bad infestation of flea problems then it's important to get the exterminator up, and this will require you to put house plants outside, any pets (including birds) in a kennel or at a friends house and you must be out of the house. It usually is just for a few hours. When you come home clean all counter tops with a bleach/water solution, and wash your kitchen floors. Often the exterminator will use environmentally safe products to rid you home of fleas. Discuss this with the exterminator. Program kills the fleas and their eggs and once the exterminator is finished even spiders won't want to inhabit your home. That's great because I hate spiders! LOL == == * I had one cat when I lived in Texas and fleas. I put some Diazinon in my vacuum bag, vacuumed thoroughly and then changed the bag--put the ones with fleas into the garbage with a top. You can buy some flea spray for under beds and other places that has flea birth control. You have to notice their gestational cycle, but it tells you how. There were no further problems. == == * Sprinkle regular table salt over carpets and in furniture, leave for three to five days. It may be messy and uncomfortable for a few days but it works like a charm and it's cheap (large box of salt is under fifty cents). It'll vacuum right up, no bad smells or harmful pesticides. * Spray Bayer flea spray on the floors and furniture and it should kill them.
Can a dog get sick from flea drops?
Possibly, yes.
Related Information:
Dogs are generally larger and don't clean themselves as much or as often with their tongues, so the flea and tick remedies used on them can be stronger and more toxic. Since cats do clean themselves mostly with their tongues, they can ingest, and be poisoned by, products intended for dogs.
Flea and tick products, including shampoos, are different for cats and dogs and must be used according to provided directions. Even when using the appropriate product, if you use it too much or too often, you can poison your pet.
Some vets believe that the rise in cancer deaths in pets is due to flea and tick products, so if you can get by without using them, it's for the best.
flea collars should also be avoided if possible. They are toxic to humans, as well as the pets that wear them. Additionally, they are not very effective.
For 15 years, I had a beautiful Persian cat who died from licking the flea medicine off of himself :(a spray-on product) That's why the newer flea treatments direct you to apply it to the back of your pets neck where they cannot lick the poison directly.
Check with a vet before applying any medications. Cats should be dosed (even the one where it goes into the skin and is not orally taken) by weight.
Rule of thumb: You shouldn't medicate yourself or your child. Why do it to your pet.
Cat's are generally smaller than dogs. It's not safe to use just any flea and tick medication on a cat. It should be specifically for cats, and recommended by a vet for your cat.
cat's skins are much more prone to allergic reactions. It could even die. Using over the counter medications for your cat may save you some money, but could cost your cat's life.
Your cat may also die from using an over the counter dog flea shampoo.
Advantage® can be used under the supervision of a Veterinarian, who will recommend very small doses. We have many cats, and its cheaper to buy Advantage in the "large dog" package than the smaller cat doses. Our vet told us how much to use for the cats, and we apply it topically, using a syringe, for convenience and control, not for injection. We fill the syringe from the dog-dose plastic container.
More Information:
There are some flea and Tick products out there that use a chemical that could be harmful for cats I believe K9 Advantex® is one of them. Frontline® has a flea and tick product for cats that I would recommend. But I would never use a product that doesn't say it is safe for cats.
I used Vectra 3D® on my dog and put less than a drop on my cat. In two days, he had developed a bald spot. I ended up taking a very expensive trip to the vet. They bathed him with Dawn Dish Soap, apparently the only thing that will get the cement like medicine off the skin. Several shots were given during this visit, as well.
They have fleas because of there fur. They eat the dogs skin and they sometimes lives the dog and go into your carpet and on you. They might go in the the ear because there's more blood and they have a reason to bite them selves.
How do you treat guinea pigs with fleas and how do you treat it?
Well, first, you need to have the right supplies to keep a guinea pig. You need a good sized cage to at least fit about 2 guinea pigs. Then you need hay and newspaper to put under the hay. You also need a guinea pig house ( which usually has little squares at the top ), a food bowl, a water bottle to hang on the cage, and if your cage is a fish tank, you should have a stand for it. After you have all of that ( and of course your guinea pig ), once a week you should cheak its food and water supply. For the food, they should be little pelets and the picture on the food bag should have a guinea pig and rabbit or another furry animal on it. The care you should have for it is you should cut their nails regulary because if they get to long, their nails could start hurting them and cause much pain. Especially if you have a carpet its nails could get stuck in it, and they might squeal. If you get a new guinea pig, and your other guinea pig stays away from the new one, that could mean that your new one is sick, and you might want to take it to the veternarian. I Hope This Helps You.
Can flea infestation kill a cat?
yes because fleas are parasites, they feed on the blood and can take too much of animals blood, small and young animals are much more at risk and will be affected more quickly than larger animals, in larger animals it may not even be noticeable, but their health is very much at risk and ultimately their life.
take the cat to a vet and or get some flea medication.
Are snow fleas harmful to humans and pets and can they live indoors?
Snow fleas are actually called Springtails. Snow flea is just a nickname. They are actually hexapods, not fleas, they do not display any parasitic behaviour such as blood sucking and lack the instruments to suck blood. They were mistaken for fleas because they have the ability to jump.
Springtails eat dead plant matter, bacteria, fungi, algae, pollen, roundworms and sap.
They are not harmful to humans or other animals since they are not a parasite like true fleas. They are actually beneficial to the environment because they help break down dead plant matter and other soil objects to help decomposition and put more nutrients back into the ground for future plants or crops. They are used by professional gardeners to control fungi growth in greenhouses.
They can live indoors too. They will live in damp, wooden areas such as bathrooms and basements, eating away the dead, damp wood. This can cause structural issues and damage the building. But the springtails are not to be blamed - they are unable to tell the difference between a bit of damp wood holding up your staircase and a bit of rotten tree. A pest controller can deal with them however by chemically spraying the wood in your home.

What is the life span of fleas?
30-90 Days (Average). A flea might live a year and a half under ideal conditions. These include the right temperature, food supply, and humidity. Generally speaking, though, an adult flea only lives for 2 or 3 months. Without a host for food, a flea's life might be as short as a few days. But with ample food supply, the adult flea will often live up to 100 days.
What kind of blood type do fleas prefer?
It is unlikely that blood type has much to do with it. A scientific study was done with mosquito found that they are more attracted to different people's scents. It is likely the same with fleas. So a person who gets bitten a lot basically smells good to them.
I too, have had a flea problem in my home. Well, they are mostly found on the carpet/sofa/curtains region. These non-flying, jumping dots are a nuisance. No spray works on them
But i have a solution. Get a insecticide powder. Sprinkle it thoroughly everywhere, especially the regions i have mentioned above, as well as the enterance of the house. After 2 hours, vaccuum your house. Do this consistently thrice a day, till a week.. and guess what, NO FLEAS!!!
What to use on a puppy for fleas?
First give your dog a good flea bath using flea shampoo. Then afterwards use one of those once a month flea medications such as Frontline Plus or Advantage II. It is a once a month flea medication that will prevent fleas & ticks from getting on him or her for a month. You apply it topically. You should also put your dog on a once a month heartworm preventative, but your Veterinarian would need to test your dog for the heartworms first to make sure he or she is negative for them before beginning the once a month heatworm preventative. It is a simple blood test.
What is the best way to get rid of fleas on a kitten?
Kittens under 8 weeks of age should not be treated with any chemical flea/tick control products. Believe it or not, Dawn dish detergent is the best thing. The surfactants in the soap smother the fleas. Dawn does not kill flea eggs, so it is best to bathe the kitten often until no more fleas are found. Try to leave the soap on the kitten for at least 5-7 minutes. I have done this to many kittens that have been rescued from flea infested areas and after 2 or 3 baths they are flea free until it's time to start the Frontline! Just be careful not to get it on their face or eyes. You will have to manually pick off the fleas that migrate there to avoid the dishsoap. Remember to keep your kitty warm and give him lots of hugs while he warms up!
Does salt kill fleas in your carpet?
It does but there are areas of concern it does not address and a better way with carpets would be to use an aerosol like Precor2000 or an adulticide (concentrate) you mix yourself and spray every inch until damp like a pro does although it would take a couple hours to dry out. Getting all that salt out of your carpet and living with it till you get results would probably not be desirable. The aerosol method has its advantages, you can easily treat soft furniture, the droplets are optimum size for deep penetration in your carpet and it contains a growth regulator in the mix- although it is not cheap.
Fleas typically like a humid warm environment, so although states like Utah, Arizona, and Nevada are almost flea free, there are certainly fleas there, they are just not as prevalent.
it is mostly impossibel to see a flea in a dog because it is so tiny that you can't even see it.
How do you get rid of fleas on horses?
There are multiple products labelled for use against lice--pyrethrin products (shampoos, fly sprays, powders), ivermectin and moxidectin dewormers, insecticide powders, etc. The key is to treat every 10 days for a minimim of 3 treatments in order to break the life cycle. Discuss the best options for your situation with your veterinarian.
How can you kill fleas o 2 weeks old kitten?
Vinegar will not kill fleas on any animal.
Bathing is the best option. The safest flea product on the market for kittens is Revolution which you can use in kittens as young as 4 weeks. However, you can use Advantage on a nursing mother which will protect the kittens as well.
The best thing i have found for killing fleas on a kitten is dawn dishdetergent. wet the kitten cover it in dawn scrub it good and leave the dawn on for 10 min. I know the cat will not be happy but it will kill the fleas and wont harm the kitten like some chemical ones can
I have been breeding pit bulls for 20 years and I have used tide on numerous occasions treat fleas. Generously spread it around on the ground and in the dog house. For small puppies, mix tide with water in a spray bottle, shake well and spray directly onto puppy. Adult dogs, I prefer to bathe them with dawn or Ajax dish detergent quick normally
Yes. But normally they cannot live on humans for long so they bite then jump off.
Also, there really isn't much of a difference between dog fleas and cat fleas. They're the same thing.
and also even if u try to kill them like if u pinch them, that won't work! u have to drown them in water
Can you put a little bleach in your dogs drinking water to get rid of fleas?
....I would soak the dog in a warm (not hot) bath with a few drops of lavender and tea tree essential oil, then spritz its fur paying particular attention to under its leg areas and tail area with a home made lemon spray ( recipe below)
Lemon Spritz.
Cut a lemon into quaters and soak it in a jug of boiling water over night.
Next day pour the mixture into a spray bottle .
Cheap, easy, safe and effective....
REMEMBER: you will need to completely and thoroughly clean all the surroundings ...bedding , towels carpets etc.
When you are done with that. Get some flea shampoo and get rid of them. The lemon was a great last meal, but they have no business in your house! The above could be done later to make the dog smell nice.
PLEASE be very careful of your dog's eyes!
