The technical knowledge required to build such a device is beyond most people. It is easier and probably actually cheaper to purchase a USB floppy drive.

Since floppy disks never have an MBR, the first sector of any diskette (that's Absolute Sector 0 or CHS 0,0,1) normally contains the Boot Record for some OS. And since they are floppy disks, you'll most likely read about Tracks ( instead of Cylinders) and Sides ( instead of Heads) when dealing with them. These terms seem to make more sense to people, since you actually hold the removable media in your hands and can observe that the jacket (or hard plastic shell) contains a circular disc having two sides without ever having to think about the heads and mechanical parts inside a floppy drive.

Depends on the size, but today they are usually measured in Gigabytes, although older devices might be measured in Megabytes.

There are external floppy drives that can be attached to a computer via the parallel port. I am unaware of any standalone adapter that would allow you to adapt an existing drive.

Technically, yes - anything that plugs into your tower is a peripheral - but, more specifically, keyboards are Input Devices, a monitor is an Output Device, a mouse is a Pointing Device, disk drives are Storage Devices, and so on; but grouped together they can all be considered Peripheral Devices.

RS-232 serial ports are far slower than USB ports. With very few exceptions, devices that use USB ports would be impractical to use on a serial port.

Yes it is possible to change the format of a floppy disk from FAT to RAW if the operating system on the PC, which the floppy is to be formated is using but the RAW format than the flopy will have the RAW format at the end of formating the floppy

No. A "system disk" is simply any disk which the computer can boot from and has an operating system installed on it.

In most modern computer systems, the hard disk is normally the system disk. However most systems can also boot from a floppy disk, a cdrom, or even a USB thumb drive, providing of course that the media in question has the necessary system files on it.

Many older systems did not have the ability to boot from the cdrom drive or USB drives. On these systems the only options were booting from the hard disk or floppy disk, so if the OS hadnt been installed to the hard disk yet (or it was broken) the only other option was the floppy disk.

Data storage devices.

The floppy drive data cable has a stripe denoting pin #1...PIN #1 on the FDD cable must be aligned with PIN #1 on the drive connector, or the drive will not work...This misalignment does not damage the drive, but the activity light will stay on constantly...To correct this, turn the computer off, reconnect the data cable aligning the pins correctly & reboot the computer....

The hard plastic case has a slider in it which you can use to open or close the notch as you want. When the notch is open the disk is write protected.

Temporary as in memory, no, but you should probably stick to a flash drive or even e-mail is better.

Panasonic introduced a large video disc (around the size of a vinyl 78 LP) in the late 70's or early 80's that did not sell. It was too expensive and the technology was not standardizsed enough to be viable in the open market.

Disk Drives have Read/Write Heads on a swinging moveable access arm that moves the head out to the area to be recorded/read-from. Random access device. Much faster

Tape drives have fixed position heads and the tape medium has to move past the head in order to transfer/record data from the head to the medium. Sequential access is slower.

Any type of file can be placed on a floppy disk, as long as it fits within the relatively limited storage space provided. In practice, the size limitation makes it difficult to place music files (except for MIDI files), videos, or high-resolution images on it.
