The founding members of the Foo Fighters were ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl (guitar, vocals), along with his Nirvana cohort Pat Smear (guitar) and ex-Sunny Day Real Estate members Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums). Goldsmith left the band fairly early and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins. Smear left the band for 7 years from 1999-2006 and was replaced in that time by Franz Stahl. The current lineup is Grohl, Smear, Mendel, and Hawkins.
