Because of our primal nature, one of our basic instincts is to join and stay in a group for protection and aid. Almost all primates do the same. The key to stopping gang violence is better parenting and better community support for parents. Opportunities in the community like those in the first answer. Better schools and much more parent participation in schools. Far too many parents have a difficult time making a living or work long hours and can't spend the necessary time it takes to nurture a child. Parents who have struggled through life with no guidelines for themselves or having succumbed to addictions don't have the tools necessary to nurture their children. This leaves a child open and vulnerable to the 'family' of the streets. These are some of the causes with no real answers; modern society is not very well oriented to nurturing children and strengthening families, although many people and organizations try. There are no simple answers for such a complex social problem.
