San Francisco has numerous gangs. The Hunters Point/Bayview District is ran by a couple of very violent gangs. The West Point Mobb and the Big Blocc gang have control over the many housing projects. Harbor rd, West Point rd, and Middelton st are constantly packed with "corner boys" and other gang members. The Oakdale Mob controls the lower section of hosuing projects and parts of the strip on 3rd st. Then, in the Western Addition, there are many smaller street level gangs, with one notable gang called the "Eddy RoCC" gang. The gang controls most of the inner city projects by putting kids as young as 12 on the street corners selling drugs instead of going to school. Because of all of the street-level dealing in the western additon/Fillmore it has a extremely high murder rate, mostly young African American men.

Actually why does anyone join a gang? To answer your question-It gives a sense of belonging to something. Unlike poverty to which most children have no control over belonging to a gang gives the feeling of power and control. Most gang members have stated that they feel powerful and like they belong to something. They are in control. Most gang members are angry at society for their poverty. So belonging to a gang with others who share their anger along with the poverty gives them a sense of belonging. Gang activities are mostly things that go against government and authority. This stems back to the poverty issue in which they blame the government and anyone who is in a position of authority for their poverty. Most poverty stricken areas have very limited resources for kids and adults alike. These areas of poverty usually have no activity areas for children to go to and unleash their feelings or just be kids. So these kids end up with others like them selves delving into mischief in gangs.

The best way to stop increasing gangs is for the people who know gang members to report them and their activities to the police instead of protecting them and hiding them. Once the banger-wannabes and their families see that their precious gangs are not immune to prosecution & punishment, they will be less likely to join.
