Garden Insects

The term 'garden insect helpers' generally refers to insects that are beneficial as pollinators or as feeders on destructive bugs. Among the best known of the beneficial insects are the ladybird beetle, the colorful butterfly, and the busy bee. What's bugging your garden? Are there slugs in your salad greens, ants in your azaleas, bean beetles in your beans, or some other pesty insect in your garden? Insects like to eat, but gardeners are not willing to share.

Why do pigs smell funny?

(a) Pigs did not always smell funny. There was a time when they emitted an enticingly fragrant odour, but unfortunately this drew unwanted attention from other species, many of them larger than the pigs themselves. It is even thought that there was a time when humans were frequently attracted to pigs, which could explain why so many porcine organs are so similar to human ones. Many of these attempts at cross-breeding resulted in disaster, and some of the products were really quite monstrous. For their survival as a species pigs gradually developed an odour which would be offensive to all other species and yet appealing to their own kind. It is even thought that the human penchant for eating ham and bacon could be a vestigial practice redolent of those earlier times. (b) They smell 'Funny' probably because of the fact they spend time in the mud, And mud might be mixed with some other animals Dung-(poop)-Please don't think that pigs are dirty because... pigs are very clean animals that do not have sweat glands and need some way to cool off. I hope I helped. (C) I worked at a ranch and when the petting zoo animals needed a care during the off season, they were brought to the main barn.

Among these animals where potbelly pigs. the horses adjusted to the sheep and goats and even the jersey calf. But not to the pigs! the reason is that a pig has no smell and this confuses the horses thus making them scared of these wee little addition to the barn. You see potbelly pigs are easy to potty train and clean up after , so their quarters were spotless.

When the stall was not clean however the strong odor comes from how quickly porcine (pig) metabolize the food they eat. pigs metabolize what they eat in less that 24 hours this is why you cook pork well to reduce the risk of getting more of what the pig ate then you bargined for.

Do ladybugs move their eggs somewhere safe?

No, ladybugs do not move their eggs to somewhere safe once the deposit is made. The location tends to be on the undersides of food and host plant leaves. The host plant will be amid, near or one of vegetation that offers such larval food sources as aphids.

Should one kill a cockchafer if you find it in your garden?

No, it is not a problem insect. The Latin name for these is Melolontha melolontha. They were largely killed off by 1911 due to their being a pest for large agricultural areas. They are very unusual looking bugs, with multiple antennae.

What is the genus of an aphid?

The second-lowest, the second most precise category in the Aphididae family is a definition of the genus of an aphid. The precise answer results only from a knowledge of the aphid in question's appearance, behavior and distribution range since the family divides into 17 subfamilies, each with tribes divided successively into subtribes, genera, species and subspecies. The Greenideinae family serves as an easy identification with one tribe (Scoutedeniini) and one genus (Schoutedenia).

Would ground nesting bees be attracted to female dogs urine and if so why - would it be the sugar content?

There shouldn't be any appreciable amount of sugar, unless the dog is diabetic. They would be attracted mainly to a source of water. Bees are also often particularly attracted to water with some salts in it.

Where do plant louses or aphids come from or spread from?

Adult aphids of breeding age have wings and fly to a new food source: tender vegetation. Some ants also "tend" aphids, and will actually bring aphids to plants in order to harvest the honeydew produced by feeding aphids.

How do you clean aphids off honeysuckle?

The best way is with a hard jet of water from a hose. Knock them loose physically by washing them off the plant. Once they hit the ground, they cannot climb back up.

Wikipedia Is there a ulraviolet light to kill aphids?

I know of none. Most light traps just use the UV to attract & then a glueboard or grid does the dirty work. Since aphids are isolated to the plants I would just spray them for immediate results. Try ECOPCOACU or ARX-completely organic & really kills effectively. These are examples of 2 eco sprays that will even work on bedbugs which are tough buggers.

What kind of bee is more aggressive at night and lives underground?

No kind of bee is more aggressive at night regardless of whether or not the species live above- or under-ground. Bees navigate by sunlight so they refrain from non-hive, non-nest activities during night. European hornets and yellow jackets nevertheless may live underground and travel at night -- particularly where there is some degree of light pollution - and try out greater aggression during such flights.

What do woolly aphids look like?

Fluffy, wool-like white wax over blue- or green-colored, one-fourth inch- (0.64-centimeter-) diameter insect bodies is the look of woolly aphids. The insects in question (Aphidoidea superfamily) prey upon nutrient-rich xylem and sugar-rich phloem, as expected of a plant sap-sucking aphid, but by way of the bark instead of the foliage. The waxy look vanishes when woolly aphids overwinter in bark cracks and crevices.

How can potato beetles be controlled?

Companion planting, diatomaceous earth, horticultural oils. pesticide schedules, removal by gloved hand or mechanical tool into soapy water-filled buckets, row covers, sanitation, and scratchy organic mulch are ways to control potato beetles. Catnip, chives, garlic, green beans, and nasturtiums have reputations as insect pest repellent plants in general and of potato beetle unfriendliness in particular. The insects in question (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) tend to develop quick resistance to pesticides even though garlic sprays and insecticidal soaps against immature and mature stages, horticultural oils against eggs, and sprays with the active ingredients azidirachtin, esfenvalerate, pyrethrin and spinosad are considered still effective potato beetle controllers and killers.

Can you get rid of squash bugs with nasturtium?

I had squash bugs 2 years ago, that destroyed my pumpkins, zucchini, and cucumbers. I moved the bed the next year and plantednasturtiums all around the squash plants. Haven't seen a squash bug since.

How well they work with an active infestation, I don't know. I just know I haven't seen one since I started companion planting with nasturtiums.

Can ladybugs overwinter in a house terrarium?

Yes, ladybugs can overwinter in a house terrarium. The insects in question (Coccinellidae family) may be fed lettuce, honey, raisins and sugar and -- through moistened cotton swabs or paper towels -- water. Pieces of bark from trees tend to have bug larvae that ladybird beetles enjoy eating.

What is the French 'lavande' in English?

'Lavender' is an English equivalent of 'lavande' [Lavandula spp].

The feminine noun 'lavande' means 'lavender'. Its singular definite article is 'la' ['the'], and its singular indefinite article 'une' ['a, one']. It's pronounced 'lah-vawnd'.

Can water or roots under the house cause gnats?

Yes. [1] Whether they're aquatic or terrestrial, gnats are attracted to moisture. [2] In terms of how they're grouped by scientists, they're members of the Nematocera suborder. They share that suborder with nematodes, many of which - such as knot and nitrogen-fixing nematodes - live off of plant roots.

Where do you position an insect house?

Facing south describes where to position an insect house. The house must have one end closed if it is tube-shaped against wind tunnels and the front end tilted slightly against moisture accumulation. It needs to be near food, warmth and water sources and to provide adequate shelter and ventilation.

What yellow caterpillars eat dill?

The black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) larva is the yellow caterpillar eating dill. The caterpillar stage of the butterfly in question prioritizes feeding upon the flowers and the seeds of such Umbelliferae family plants as carrots, celery, dill, fennel, parsley and Queen Anne's lace. The caterpillar ranges in color from brown-purple and white upon hatching to leaf green with black and white bands and yellow spots as later instars.

How do you get bees out of a leg in a patio table?

use wasp and hornet killer to spray into or onto the nest.

I recently saw at least a dozen or more bees or wasps flying very low on my lawn how can I find out where they are coming from?

Bees have round fat bodies and are usually yellow with dark chocolate to black stripes across their body. They pollinate during the spring and summer, but when Fall is close they will often become most dormant and actually walk across your lawn. Hornets and Wasps have elongated bodies and can be golden in color, some with stripes. They will also walk along the glass in a dormant state (this is nature.) You should get a professional in to find out where the hive is. If these are bees (fat in body with the stripes) then phone a beekeeper who would be more than willing to find the hive and take it away. Bees in the U.S. and Canada have literally be dying and are disappearing, so save the bees! Bees aren't generally dangerous or aggressive, but hornets and wasps are. If these are hornets or wasps then find an exterminator that uses environmentally safe sprays (may have to be done twice, but you are not charged for the second time.) I had a wasps nest that was huge in my attic and it took the exterminator a second time to get rid of them completely.

Why aren't there gnats north of the gnat zone?

Because farther north, they are swatting gnats with machetes.

My plumeria has yellow eggs underneath the leaves Some are heavily infested What is it What can you do to eliminate it The bush is about 8 years old and has never had this disease before?

Leif Forsberg, Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries Frangipanis (Plumeria rubra) are well-established garden and landscape plants in Queensland. These plants are generally easy to grow and, apart from one fungal disease called rust, are free of other major disease problems. They are rather unusual looking plants, with stubby branches and large leaves. Frangipanis are deciduous, providing useful shade and large, waxy and fragrant flowers in summer, but allowing welcome sunlight through their bare branches in winter. A disease called frangipani rust, caused by the fungus Coleosporium plumeriae, is now a firmly established and serious problem of frangipanis, detracting from their appeal. This rust fungus does not have any other known hosts other than frangipani. The disease has been confirmed to be present in Queensland since 1993. How the disease was introduced is not known. Symptoms of rust include many small, bright-yellow pustules on the undersides of leaf surfaces. These pustules rupture to release masses of powdery, yellow spores. The spores, falling from infected leaves onto stems and leaves below, make them appear as if dusted by yellow powder. Heavily infected leaves fall prematurely. Rust diseases are difficult to control once well established. Nursery professionals growing frangipanis in areas where rust occurs can prevent rust by spraying regularly, before any symptoms occur, using protectant fungicides such as chlorothalonil or copper oxychloride. Where rust pustules are present, more specific rust fungicides such as oxycarboxin can be used. Good spray coverage, and the initiation of a spray program before symptoms occur or at very early onset of disease, is important. Cuttings should come from disease-free plants. Rust infections, although not visible, may still be present in leafless cuttings. In gardens it is not advisable or desirable to spray large plants. A number of broad-spectrum mixtures that help to control rust, various other fungal diseases and pests of garden plants in general are available to home gardeners and may be used on small plants (see Table 1). Removing infected fallen leaves may reduce inoculum sources for the next season's crop of new leaves. However, air-borne spores from other frangipani sites will probably re-infect the plant.

Unfortunately, garden plants will just have to live with this problem, although nurseries should and can provide rust-free frangipanis. The rate of build-up of this disease may vary from year to year. In some years, drier conditions may slow down the rate of rust development so that plants will still remain attractive for long periods. So don't get out the axe, but rusty frangipanis are here to stay.

Why is the box elder tree named after the box elder bug?

The box elder tree is not named after the box elder bug. The trees in question (Acer negundo) receive their name from the similarity of their white wood to that of a boxwood and of their pinnately compound foliage to that of an elder. The name-saking serves the other way around, with the insects in question (Boisea trivittata) being linked with their favorite food source.

Home remedy with vinegar dish soap and sugar for gnats?

[1] The ratio of the three depends upon how strong/weak and how fast/superfast this home remedy is intended to work. A popular ratio tends to be 1 cup vinegar, which can be diluted by water, to 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon dish soap. The idea is that the gnats are attracted to the sugar and the vinegar. The soap then kills and helps drown them, by lessening the surface tension of the vinegar or the vinegar and water mixture. [2] Just a soap and water mixture works. In fact, that's basically what the organic control ka insecticidal soap is made up of.

How do you get rid of gnats?

  • If you don't want gnats around, you have to cut off their food supply. This means fruits and vegetables have to go in the refrigerator or a bin the bugs can't penetrate. Make sure house plants stay damp, but not wet, and they must have the proper drainage. Gnats just love over-watered house plants. Empty trashcans regularly and don't allow rotting food to sit in the house. Make sure all trash receptacles and sink drains are cleaned thoroughly, and don't have any old rancid food stuck to them. Never let dirty dishes stand in the sink.
  • Your best resource is chemicals. The supermarket and hardware stores have several flying insect spray options for you to choose from. Just about any one of these will take care of your gnat problem. Be sure to check the back of the label to make certain it isn't harmful to pets. If your home is experiencing an all-out infestation, you may need to look into a fogging product. This will require you to seal off cabinets and anywhere else food and eating implements are stored. Be sure to take the pets and leave the house for the day.
  • You can also get rid of gnats by using products found around the home. Since they are attracted to the scent of vinegar, fill a jar with vinegar and poke holes in the lid. The gnats will climb into the jar, but they won't be able to climb out. For those that remain in the house, try putting vegetable oil around your kitchen sink drain. Gnats finding themselves coated in the oil will be unable to breed. If you're not interested in potentially clogging your drain with vegetable oil, pouring a cup of ammonia down your kitchen sink is said to get rid of any flies hovering around that area. Let it sit for a couple of hours before using the sink again
  • Another way is to take some kind of juice and pour it in a cup. Then you can use powdered bleach in the mix and they should attract and drown.Wine also works without bleach.Or another trick is to take a slightly rotten fruit and put it in a small glass of water. Then pour powdered bleach on it and mix it in. One to several tablespoons of dishwasher soap to every cup of water. This soapy water mix damages the breathing tubes. The gnat can't breathe, and dies.
  • Place small bowl of apple cider vinegar in the area with foil over top and poke holes in the foil with a toothpick.
  • It's generally easier to keep them out, with screens, than to actually get rid of them. But you can spray something like Raid house and garden insecticide.

It is important to identify the type of flying insect we are dealing with. Most commonly these insects feed off of organic material and they prefer the moist damp areas. If you are seeing them primarily in the kitchen check your drains. Easy way is to put some clear plastic wrap over the drain before you go to bed and see if there are any insects on the bottom side when you wake up in the morning.

  • If so you need to put an enzyme down the drains that are affected. You want some thing that is going to kill the organic material. One product is called drain gel and works great.
  • Now if you are not seeing them in the drains make sure you don't not have any potted plants. If you do take them all out side and that should solve your problem.
  • If it is not any of those, you need to check real good and see if you have any fruit that may be going bad or any places where water may leak (aka: Plumbing fixtures that may be hidden in the wall by a removable peice of wall.)
