What happens when body rejects food through feeding tube?
Sh*ts his pant mybe.Scentist just have recently found out this happens to a lucky 1 out of a 100 people.
-------
My sister was unfortunate enough to have this happen to her. She suffered from delayed gastric emptying -- basically her digestive system didn't move food through. She went through virtually all formulas on the market and ended up going to IV nutrition. If the question is looking for what you can do to address intolerance, here's some ideas:
If the problem is an emptying problem like hers or a malabsorption problem, they have "elemental" formulas that are already partially broken down, so it's easier for the body to digest. So, that is one option. Another option is adding things to the formula or taking medications to address whatever issues the formula is causing. So, if it's constipation for example, there's powdered fiber you can add. If the problem is an intolerance to the ingredients, there's a great formula called Compleat that contains mostly real food. Some people also actually puree and make their own tube food. Obviously, it's important to consult your doctor before trying anything new and to regularly check up on the patient's nutritional health.
If none of those options work and no formula or supplement combinations work, there is an option of IV nutrition. You can actually get full nutrition through your veins. It's not ideal and there are risks and side effects, but it can be a relief to someone who's been miserable on tube feedings.
If the question was just looking for what happens to the body when it "rejects" the formula, it's generally vomiting, diahhrea, and/or severe bloating. Other symptoms might include constipation and nausea.
What is part of the gastrointestinal system but not the gastrointestinal tract?
I think you are looking for liver and pancreas, these are accessory digestive organs that produce enzymes and emulsifiers that are secreted into the digestive tract.
In which abdominal quadrant are bowel sounds most active and easiest to auscultate?
Bowel sounds are MOST ACTIVE in the Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ) because to the right of the Umbilicus is the Ileocecal Valve and the point at which the Small Intestine connects to the Large Intestine. However, they can be heard in other quadrants too but the Right Lower Quadrant is where bowel sounds are most active.
Gastric suction is a procedure that empties the contents of the stomach. It may be done for tests, or to remove materials such as poisons.
Alternative NamesGastric lavage; Stomach pumping; Nasogastric tube suction
How the test is performedA tube is inserted through the nose or mouth, down the food pipe (esophagus), and into the stomach. Sometimes you may get a numbing medicine to reduce irritation and gagging as the tube is being inserted.
Stomach contents can be removed using suction right away, or after spraying water through the tube.
How to prepare for the testIn an emergency, such as when a patient has swallowed poison or is vomiting blood, no preparation is needed for gastric suction. When it is done for testing, your doctor may ask you not to eat overnight, or to stop taking certain medications.
How the test will feelYou may feel a gagging sensation as the tube is passed.
Why the test is performedThis test may be performed for several different reasons, including:
There is a very small risk of the tube being accidentally placed into the airway instead of the esophagus.
Other small risks include the following:

What Gastric juice digest proteins?
There are two things in gastric juices, Pepsin and hydrochloric acid. If one is alone, it would not do any digestion of proteins. But together, they can digest proteins.
Where can a colonoscopy be done?
The procedure can be done either in the doctor's office or in a special procedure room of a local hospital. An intravenous (IV) line will be started in a vein in the arm. The patient is generally given a sedative and a pain-killer
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water. After the body uses these vitamins, leftover amounts leave the body through the urine.
Typically, water-soluble vitamins can not be stored by the body. Vitamin B12 is special, because the body can store it for years in the liver.
Alternative NamesCobalamin; Deficiency - B12
FunctionVitamin B12, like the other B vitamins, is important for metabolism. It helps in the formation of red blood cells and in the maintenance of the central nervous system.
Food SourcesVitamin B12 is found in eggs, meat, poultry, shellfish, milk, and milk products.
Side EffectsVitamin B12 deficiencies occur when the body is unable to properly use the vitamin. Pernicious anemia can make the body unable to absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract.
Because vitamin B12 comes primarily from animal products, people who follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet and do not consume eggs or dairy products may require vitamin B12 supplements. (Non-animal sources of vitamin B12 exist but are highly variable in their B12 content. They are considered unreliable sources of the vitamin.)
Those who had surgery on specific parts of the small intestine or stomach are also prone to a deficiency if they do not take B12 supplements.
Low levels of B12 can cause anemia, numbness or tingling in the arms and legs, weakness, and loss of balance.
RecommendationsThe Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine recommends the following dietary intake for vitamin B 12:
Infants
Children
Adolescents and Adults
Specific recommendations depend on age, gender, and other factors (such as pregnancy). Women who are pregnant or producing breast milk (lactating) need higher amounts. Ask your health care provider which amount is best for you.
The best way to get the daily requirement of essential vitamins is to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods from the food guide pyramid.

Where is gastric juice secreted and what are its components?
The acidic digestive fluid secreted by various glands in the stomach lining into the lumen of thestomach , primarily for the partial digestion of food as well as the eradication of many pathogenicmicrobes that have concurrently entered by way of the oral cavityComponents:The gastric juice is made up of hydrochloric acid , pepsinogen and other digestive enzymes( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) , intrinsic factor , gastrin , mucus , and bicarbonates . It has a pH ranging from 1 to 2. Its low pH is essential in activating many digestive enzymes and in destroying various pathogens . The gastric juice also contains bicarbonates to neutralize the acid and thereby regulate the pH level in the stomach .
Can you drive a car after a colonoscopy?
You are given a short acting sedative for the colonoscopy. You are not permitted to drive yourself home.
What is a common cause of constipation?
There are a number of different possible causes of severe constipation. Lack of fiber in the diet is the most common reason. Bear in mind that peristalsis (the muscular contractions which propel food and the residue of food through the alimentary canal) is only triggered by fiber, nothing else. There are many dietary sources of fiber, including fresh fruit and vegetables, beans, and whole wheat or bran. But some people manage to devise diets which are deficient in fiber. If all you eat is maccaroni and cheese, you are going to get into trouble. You can take Metamucil as a fiber supplement, if needed. Speaking of cheese, that is another source of constipation. Cheese is what is known as a binding agent. It tends to make the fecal matter more solid, and as a result, it may become too solid to easily move through your bowels, if your cheese consumption is excessive. Finally, there can be blockages in your bowels which prevent the normal movement of food and food residue. Bowel cancer can result in tumors which grow into the space through which food would otherwise be moving. This is the most difficult cause of constipation, since it requires very elaborate medical treatment, rather than merely a change of diet. With any luck, your problem is not that serious.
How does the epiglottis work with other systems to keep the body healthy?
The epiglottis makes sure that no food goes into your lungs. When you swallow, the epiglottis moves and covers the windpipe so the food can go down into the stomach so the food can digest.
Where does the chemical breakdown of carbohydrates happen in the body?
They are everywhere. All cells have some amount of carbohydrates. In liver and muscles, carbohydrate glycogen is stored.
What information should the physician know about the patient before a colonoscopy?
allergies to any medications or anesthetics, bleeding problems, or is pregnant. The doctor should be informed of all the medications the patient is taking
should a person not take medications/prescriptions prior to the procedure..perhaps, causing drug interactions that are administered before or during the procedure?
Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)?
Another procedure, called transvenous intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS).creates a shunt within the liver itself, by linking the portal vein with a vein draining away from the liver together with a device called a stent.
How do you fix a fistula in your rectum?
A fistula is an abnormal passageway between two areas where no passageway should exist. So there can be a fistula that forms between the rectum and the vagina. Rectal-vaginal fistulas require surgery to repair.
What are the symptoms of a twisted gut in humans?
my twisted gut started as a sever stomach ache and quickly progressed to being an extremely serious illness. i was taken to hospital having gone to the gp for advise. once at hospital i deteriorated fast. i was hot but wasn't running a temperatyre, the bed was too soft, even though it was in fact, rock hard and the pain moved from side to side in back and came round to my abdomen. i had xrays. which showed nothing - not surprising since the machine wasn't working! drs examined me, asked my family if i was anorexic, they were given short sharp shift by my mother. i was given an enema and discharged - to be rushed straight back by another ambulance. by now i was in dire straits, literally nothing would stay down and things that had been going down so far, reappeared as faeces via me being sick! i was tubed and left for a few days, unbelievable, but true! then at last, someone thought to re xray me, and even though i needed liquid in me, the radiologist timed it perfectly, knowing she had 15 seconds max before i was sick with the water i had been given. it was enough, the xray showed the blockage up. it was action stations, though unfortunately i still wasn't operated on straight away as they thought as i had been ill for nearly a fortnight i wouldn't be alive in 30 mins, i was so i had the op. im still here 23 years on, with four kids, happy and healthy :)
Why no alcohol after colonoscopy?
Colonoscopies and the preparations for them remove much of the mucous that protects the intestinal tract. Without it, alcohol (which kills unprotected cell tissue) will burn the inside of your intestines.
the sedative and the pain medications will keep the patient very drowsy and relaxed. Most patients complain of minor discomfort and pressure from the colonoscope moving inside. However, the procedure is not painful.
Can you eat eggs before a colonoscopy?
No reason not to. You will be given instructions for preparation for your colonoscopy, including fasting (not eating) using a laxative to clean out your intestinal system, and drinking a LOT of Gatorade and apple juice. You need to follow those instructions exactly, or the staff will not be able to do your procedure. You ARE going to spend a lot of time sitting in the bathroom during your prep. Take along a couple of books, and a pack of baby wet wipes. Really.
Can an irritable bowel syndrome kill you?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is not fatal. So no -- can't kill you.
