German Shepherds are generally active dogs. Both of mine "talk" to me - especially the male. He "whines" when he is excited - for example when I first get home or when we are going somewhere.

There are several possibilities, but a vet should be consulted for a diagnosis. It is possible it is from degenerative myelitis, a disease that effects GSDs and their ability to use their hind quarters.

A shepherd will not stand a chance against a pit that comes out of bloodlines that produce fighting dogs. The shepherd simply lacks "gameness" and the pit has it in spades. Also, the police use shepherds, who by the way, really do bite and hold a suspect, unlike what someone else said, because they used to be a very versatile breed before they stuck their heads in the confirmation toilet. The police do not use the pit, who although would make a great police dog and he will out, because of the stigma associated with the breed.

There has been a movement in recent years to feed household pets what they would eat in nature. Several companies make grain-free food and even some make raw food for cats and dogs. Raw chicken theoretically isn't bad for your German shephard...as long as it's Salmonella free. That's not a given when you buy it from the grocery store. It's assumed you will cook it past a given temperature where Salmonella couldn't survive.

If you check the FDA or USDA websites for recalls you will see that one very large manufacturer of dog and cat food had a large recall. The food being produced was somehow contaminated by Salmonella. Most of what I read indicated that the PEOPLE feeding their dogs became infected. I'm not certain if any animals became ill or died.

If you want to feed your animal raw chicken you might look into some of the companies making raw foods. They are usually supplemented with ground bone (because if your dog ate a chicken the bones would be eaten as well), vitamins and minerals.
