The Gettysburg Address was not meant to dedicate a battlefield, it was delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. That cemetery was located on a portion of the battlefield where the Battle of Gettysburg took place.

Read it aloud over and over. It will eventually stick in your head like song you hate does. Break it down in halves if you think it will help. It will only last about two minutes so it wont take long to memorise. And remember, Abraham Lincoln READ it to the audience.

Abraham Lincoln became the United States’ 16th President in 1861, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy in 1863.

The speech basically speaks for itself. He wanted to remind his audience that former generations had tilled the soils to make the country what is was and that future generations basically shouldn't 'mess things up' but take pride in their forefathers and continue on in the same fashion. Lincoln had a broader sense of the war other than freeing slaves and that was self government and democracy. Lincoln felt that 'All men should be created equal' and this included freeing the slaves. He was also saying in around about way when America became a Nation. Lincoln was a compassionate man and detested the wages of war, but it was necessary and to honor the dead the war was fought bravely and he did not want these men to die for nothing. These men were devoted to freedom and self government. Basically, many disagreed with Lincoln regarding self government and it was important to Lincoln to prove them wrong and it could be a good thing.
