Technically, most fish can survive without pumps and air fulters in a large outdoor pond with a large surface area for ixygen to enter the water and plants to clean the water. However, if keeping them as pets you should always provide pumps and filters, ir they will live very short lives. Otherwise it would be similar to keeping a human in a dark crate with little oxygen and no waste disposal. do not belive that betta fish can live in these terrible conditions, as it is unfair to them

It can also be a problem with the water quality, so this should be tested to check for the levels of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates which should be 0, 0, and less than 10 respectively; if it is higher, you should do a 50% to 75% water change.

Depending on how large of a section has been bitten off, the fish in question should be removed and put in a more shallow tank by itself for the tail to grow back,for the most part once a fish is injured the other fish will not leave it alone, also the risk of infection is quite high which will not do the injured fish any good, live plants will provide a safe haven if the injured fish is too survive in the existing tank provided the tank has been running a while. If your guppy is in with just guppies,and you have live plants also in your tank the chances of the tail growing back are very good. Most commercial Goldfish foods/flakes contain some cereals and I have seen large goldfish eating boiled peas, boiled french beans and stale bread but I would not be trying to feed home cooked vegetables to my goldfish if wished them to live long and healthy lives. If you really wish to give your goldfish a propper treat, give them some live earthworms. (If the worms are too big for the fish to eat whole chop them up).

Other than white being the natural genetic colour of that specific goldfish nothing should make it turn white. If it has turned white then there would have to be something drastically wrong with its water. I would guess fungus is covering the fish. My advice is to do a very large water change say 90% ASAP followed by daily water changes of 20% and see if the fish gains its old colours back. If fungus is present it may also be of benefit to add 1 teaspoon full of cooking (sea) salt per gallon of water. Lack of sunlight can not and will not change the colour of a fishes scales. Lack of light can certainly change ones 'perception' of a fishes colour but that has nothing to do with the actual colour of the fish. The only things that I know of that can change a fishes colour are its current health and maybe its condition. Poor health/condition can result in a dulling of the fishes colour(s) and in some species there is a brightening or changing of colour to indicate breeding condition. This does not happen with goldfish. It has been pointed out to me by "Star Wanderer" (ref goldfish in wikkipedia) that theoretically, due to the light receptors/reflectors (chromatophores) inherent in goldfish and a natural ability to camoflage themselves to a greater or lesser degree by colour change, it is possible for a goldfishes colour to fade and become paler. I stand corrected but still find it hard to believe that a normal goldfish under normal conditions would turn white.

Nothing really happens. It just shows that they are stressed out, or scared. If this happens, try to figure out why they would be scared or stressed, then get rid of the problem. Or, if it is another fish, move them away from each other.
