A gorilla named Gargantua, which was raised in captivity, was the largest known gorilla in the world, weighing, according to sources (see related link below) around 550 to 600 lbs. Lowland gorillas in the wild only grow to around 400 to 500 lbs, by comparison.
What year was the gorilla discovered?
Gorillas were officially discovered by Western science in the early 20th century. The first scientific description of gorillas was made by American explorer Thomas Savage in the 19th century, but it wasn't widely accepted until later expeditions confirmed their existence.
What climate does a gorilla live in?
Gorillas primarily live in tropical forests with temperatures ranging from 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. They are found in equatorial regions of Africa, including rainforests, montane forests, and bamboo forests.
What are some of the gorillas adaptations?
Gorillas have adaptations like their large body size, strong muscles, and thick fur for protection in their forest habitats. Their opposable thumbs and strong grip help them climb trees and forage for food easily. Gorillas also have a complex social structure and communication system to navigate their social interactions within their groups.
Gorillas' enemies typically include predators such as leopards and humans, who may hunt them for bushmeat, trophies, or theft of their habitat. Additionally, disease outbreaks like Ebola can also pose a significant threat to gorilla populations.
What US scientist studied gorillas in Africa?
Dian Fossey (Jan 16, 1932 - Dec 26, 1985)
BibliographyWhat do silverback gorillas eat?
Silverback gorillas are primarily herbivores, feeding on a diet consisting mainly of fruits, leaves, shoots, and stems. Occasionally, they may also consume insects and small animals. Their diet varies depending on the availability of food in their habitat.
No, they're mammals. Mammals don't lay eggs (except for monotremes).
Gorillas have very muscular bodies.A big butt means you either have a fat or muscular butt.Their butts aren't saggy or jiggly,so they have muscular butts.A human who does squats frequently will, get a bigger butt because of the muscle increase.Gorillas naturally are muscular do to genetics,so that is why their bodies look they way they are (including butts).
Where in the worlld do silverback gorillas live?
Gorillas live in the rainforests and subtropical forests in Africa. The term Silverback refers to a male gorilla having reached an age of maturity which becomes visibly distinctive in a silvery-grey coloring that appears on the back of the gorilla.
How long to mountain gorillas live?
Approximately 35 years in the wild, and about 50 years in captivity.
Gorillas, like humans, are primates. This means they share a common ancestor with humans, a proto-ape, if you will. Because of this evolutionary kinship, they are very like us, they can walk on their feet when they're adults, they can eat with their hands, they can listen and learn as quick as we can so they are nearly the same as us! Gorillas in captivity have shown a remarkable grasp of basic language concepts heretofore thought to belong to humans alone. The most famous of these gorillas, Koko, learned to communicate with researchers using sign language, since a gorilla's vocal cords aren't capable of reproducing spoken language. Koko produced complex sentences using sign language suggesting gorillas and humans likely share similar thought processes. Koko expressed emotions and a rich and complex mental life.
How many silverback gorillas are there left?
There are approximately 1,000 silverback gorillas left in the wild, primarily in the forests of Central Africa. They are classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease. Conservation efforts are underway to help protect and increase their population.
Wild gorillas will eat fresh fruit, plants, herbs, tree bark, bugs, and bamboo. Gorillas that live in the western low lands will eat differently than gorillas that live in the mountains. Mountain gorillas are vegetarian and western low land gorillas are not.
Why is the Gorilla an endangered species?
Gorillas are an endangered species primarily due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease. Deforestation, human encroachment, and mining activities have greatly reduced their natural habitats. Poaching for bushmeat and the illegal wildlife trade also pose significant threats to gorilla populations. Additionally, diseases such as Ebola have had devastating impacts on gorilla populations in some regions.
What foods do Gorilla beringei eat?
The species Gorilla beringei are the "eastern" gorillas, who eat mostly foliage (plant stems and leaves), as their habitat is not as abundant in fruits. They also eat seeds, bamboo shoots, and occasionally insects.
Gorillas are not inherently lazy animals. They are known to conserve energy by taking frequent breaks and moving slowly, which can sometimes give the appearance of laziness. However, they are highly intelligent and use their energy strategically for activities like foraging, socializing, and caring for their young.
What are the abiotic considerations of the silver back gorilla?
Abiotic considerations for silverback gorillas include the availability of suitable habitat (such as forests), water sources, and appropriate climate conditions (temperature and humidity) for their survival. They also require access to food sources, including vegetation, fruits, and insects. Human activities, such as deforestation and climate change, can impact these abiotic factors and threaten the gorillas' habitat and food sources.
How much does an gorilla weigh?
On average, an adult male gorilla can weigh between 300-450 pounds, while an adult female gorilla typically weighs between 150-250 pounds. However, weights can vary considerably among individual gorillas based on factors like age, sex, and diet.
How many gorillas are in the world?
There are three subspecies of gorillas: the western lowland gorilla, the eastern lowland gorilla, and the mountain gorilla. All three subspecies are endangered, two are considered critically endangered.
There are approximately 50,000 western lowland living in the wild in Central West Africa.
There are only about 2,500 eastern lowland gorillas living in the wild in the Congolese rainforest.
The mountain gorilla is on the verge of extinction with only 500 living in the wild (and none in captivity).
A gorilla niche refers to a market segment that is well-established and dominated by one or a few major companies. Just as gorillas are the dominant species in their ecosystem, these companies are the dominant players in the market, making it challenging for new or smaller businesses to enter and compete effectively.
How much stronger is a gorilla than a human?
"Approximately 20 times stronger than a sturdy man. A full grown male Silverback gorilla is one of the strongest land mammals on Earth, able to rip car doors clean off and snap tree limbs with ease. Even a small, female Gorilla is able to easily rip the arms clean off a man."
I find it funny how people doubt the sheer might of the gorilla and other Apes
Here is a great way to put it
adv human can lift as a 1 rep max 150 kg per leg [full grown male]
x2 [booth legs] 300 kg
gorilla's use their arms to run [quadracept]
an olympian can lift 500lbs per leg .. see were im going with this?
If i were to replace my legs and arms [length and strength] i would be a gorilla in a very crude way
and as gorilla's rib cage , bone structure allows for a much higher muscle concentration they are more likely to be alott stronger.
The world record of a human leg press is over 2,500 lbs. The average male adult can easily do multiple reps of over 1,000 lbs, no problem. When comparing the physical strength of humans and other primates it is important to recall the whole and compare overall, rather than specifying on one particular aspect that favors one side.
The reason why when asked this question, people tend to compare upper body strength of gorillas to our own, is at least threefold. Firstly, for thousands of years strength was defined primarily by upper body strength because this was the main differentiating factor between men and women. Big and strong meant arm strength replete with bulging. sweaty. pulsating biceps. The far more common and far superior leg strength is simply taken for granted.
Secondly, it showcases the truly awesome power gorillas so amazingly display. To show the realistic outcome where even adolescent children could outperform a gorilla in lower body strength is just not that captivating. Who would want to watch something we know all of us could do? Not exactly record setting ratings material
Lastly, people, western society in particular. tends toward anthropomorphism. Ours is a society where films depicting the slaughter and torture of people is not only acceptable, but considered standard while any depiction of cruelty towards animals is met with utter horror and disdain We simply like animals and gorillas are no exception. Naturally we place the animal in a position where we can cheer them on.
I suppose in overall strength when comparing our greatest asset, lower body to that of a gorillas wheelhouse upper body, parody more or less ensues. You could call it a draw. How about a spelling bee?
If mountain gorilla became extinct what would happen?
Probaibly, waht might happen is that part of Africa that they live in would become over populated with plants, but not just any plants. Plants that might be diseased and could kill an actual super important animal or mabey a chance that scientist's might discover that some of the plants might also be harmful to humans. Now we can't just walk through the beautiful forest anymore because of these harmful plants. So gorillas do help us in a way that could save some lives of us. Now we're still killing them and that doesn't seem fair but they help us by eating these disease infested plants. So this would pose a problem if they died or so called went extinct.
