What happens when you have a raw spot in your mouth?

If you have a raw spot in your mouth, you need to get to the reason why it is there. If you burned yourself on pizza or hot food, then it should heal in a few days. Warm salt water rinses usually do the trick. If it does not go away in a week or so, I would definitely see a dentist to find out the underlying cause.

Why do periodontal probing depths not change after dental scaling?

"Because you already lost bone due to destructive bacteria. Scaling slows the progression of further damage." New AnswerI partly disagree with the answer above. Actually, probe depths should "decrease" when you go from a state of periodontitis to a stable periodontal condition (stable = no inflammation or infection). However, the periodontal destruction that has occured (know as CAL - Clinical Attachment Loss) does not change once the disease is arrested. You may get some clinical attachment "gain," but it is usually minimal without surgery. Your dental hygienist or periodontist will note the changes in perio probe depths before and after debridement of the endotoxins and calculus. You should see 1-3mm reduction after treatment. If the measurements don't decrease, then it may be an indicator that the pocket is not healing, or it was not inflammed previously. If it bleeds or is not light pink in color, then it is still inflammed and needs more attention. Periodontal Educator, Private College (BWD)

Certain medications used to control seizures may cause an oral condition known as gingival enlargement or gingival overgrowth, increasing the risk of periodontal disease, tooth decay, and oral infections.Gingival enlargement, the currently accepted terminology for an increase in the size of the gingiva, is a common feature of gingival disease.[1] This is strictly a clinical description of the condition and avoids the erroneous pathologic connotations of terms used in the past such as hypertrophic gingivitis or gingival hyperplasia. New Answer;

Brushing and flossing alone cannot completely remove all of the plaque and biofilm from a person with gum disease. If it could, most gingivitis would be non-existent. Plaque biofilm is full of anaerobic bacteria (living without oxygen) that are deposited on your teeth and in the concave root surfaces under your gums. Your brush and floss can't physically reach all of these areas to completely remove these bacteria. However, with an irrigator, you can easily deliver a stream of water to flush the bacteria and loose particles out of these hard-to-reach areas.
---------------------

Managing gum disease is all about daily plaque control - essentially sound oral hygiene. That means, in most cases, stopping the plaque in your mouth is really in your own hands. Brush every day. Floss every day. Period. Your dentist or oral hygienist may recommend fluoride toothpaste or tartar reduction rinses. Colgate Total is approved by the FDA for helping to prevent advanced gum disease by reducing plaque and tartar.

Dental professionals recommend oral irrigation as a great way to really clean teeth and gums. Oral irrigators get what your toothbrush and floss, don't, so plaque and tartar and the resulting advanced gum disease never come back.
Oral irrigators flood the mouth with a jet of water under pressure to flush offending food particles and bacteria from the mouth. And most importantly, from under the gum line where the infection is. It is just like a wound on your arm - you must keep it clean for it to heal.

There are many types of irrigators. Fairly new on the market are irrigators that attach to your shower head or your sink faucet such as Waterpik or OralBreeze.

All types have pros and cons.

Should exam gloves be worn to brush your kids teeth?

No. That is not necessary. However, dental hygienists wear exam gloves due to the fact that some of their patients have abscesses in their mouths which, from time to time, exude pus (and could be carried by the hygienist from one patient to another, unless gloves were changed for each oral exam).

What structure's inflammation is called Gingivostomatitis?

Gingivostomatitis is inflammation of the gingiva (gums) and the oral mucosa of the mouth (basically, the inside your mouth and cheeks).

How much fluoride is needed daily?

The FDA has not set an RDA for fluoride. In fact, according to many sources, they have never actually approved its use. That has to do with fluoride being in use before the FDA was formed in 1938. Unfortunately, its use was in rat poison.

Today, there is much debate concerning fluoride and its safety (or more to the point, it being unsafe) for humans. As such, it appears that tolerance levels are the issue, rather than how much is needed daily.

Why do you get a dental abscess treated right away?
