You can't actually "repair" a nick on an LCD screen. However, there are methods you can use to diminish the visibility of the nick. The effectiveness of these methods depends on the severity of the nick:

1 - Apply a small amount of Vaseline with a soft cloth or Q-tip. Wait about 10 minutes, and then remove any excess. This will fill in the nick and make it less noticeable. This is a temporary fix, and you will need to reapply the Vaseline each time you clean the screen.

2 - Rub the area of the nick VERY gently with a clean white eraser. This will also serve to fill in the nick and make it less noticeable. Do not press hard or apply excess pressure to the nick, or your may expand it and make it worse.

3 - Rub the area of the nick (again, VERY gently) with a solution of isopropyl rubbing alcohol and water. Start with a 3.5% solution (one capful of alcohol to 1/2 cup of water). You can increase the strength to up to 35%, but any stronger, and you may damage your screen. The alcohol acts to dissolve the anti-scratch coating around the nick so that it fills in. Again, this is a tricky process, so proceed at your own risk.

Personally, the Vaseline trick seems to have worked for me. Although it didn't completely cover the nick, it reduced the visibility by about 50-75% (which is better than nothing). As I usually sit about 8-10 feet away from the TV, I could really tell the difference.

While there is no way to actually repair a nick (aside from replacing the entire screen, which may cost as much as a new set), you can reduce it to where you can live with it.

DVI and HDMI share the same signal format. DVI is found on computers and HDMI is the norm for domestic video equipment. There are some differences in capability but the only one that affects performance is the audio support. HDMI carries imbedded audio on the same cable. DVI does not support audio. It is perfectly acceptable to take a computer DVI output to an HDMI input on a display by using a DVI-HDMI cable. Most modern televisions even have an analog audio input that is linked to an HDMI input so that DVI sources can be used with a separate audio connection. Maximum lengths for DVI cables are normally quoted as a lower figure than for HDMI. The maximum length in fact is very dependent on the quality of the cable, the quality of the signal driver (the video source) and the receiver (the signal input). As the cable length gets longer, there is no loss of quality but once the maximum cable length is exceeded, the image will become broken up or will just not appear at all.

Your question is based on two premises:

Firstly, that digital television is a form of progress. This isn't necessarily a sound assumption, given that digital television is inherently much more complex to decode and isn't backwards compatible with decades of existing hardware. Go into your user's menu and select the channel search function. It should allow you to search both analog and digital channels providing it has a digital tuner.

1. I would suggest using an audio slitter cable if it's an old set of external speakers
2. or almost any DVD/BlueRay will have multiple audio in on the back of it (like audio in for TV or audio for Aux or Tuner). Then just set the single audio out to your speakers. 30 meters is a long distance to run an HDMI cable. You are unlikely to find a great choice of options available at all. There are Cat6 HDMI cable extenders on Ebay under $25 and also a wireless HDMI extender that sells on Ebay for over $300. There was a 100 ft 30 meter for under $100 on Ebay. No, you do not need a separate HDTV antenna unless you are using the antenna to get your channels. If you have cable TV, then the antenna is not necessary.
