Head Gaskets and Valve Covers

Gaskets are seals between two mating pieces. Head gaskets are located between the engine block and cylinder head. Valve covers refer to the protective layer that keeps oil and dirt away from the engine.

How do you use Sodium Silicate to repair a head gasket on a 2.2 diesel van?

Your automobile MUST be running and you pour the sodium silicate into the radiator, allow it to circulate and flow through the areas needed. The high temperature's will cause it to harden (like glass). "This technique works because at 210-220 °F the sodium silicate loses water molecules to form a very powerful sealant that will not re-melt below 1500 °F." A sodium silicate repair of a leaking head gasket can hold for up to two years and even longer in some cases. The effect will be almost instant, and steam from the radiator water will stop coming out the exhaust within minutes of application. This repair only works with water to cylinder or water to Air applications and where the sodium silicate reaches the "conversion" temperature of 210-220 °F. I would highly suggest disconnecting your heater just to be on the safe side. To prevent it blocking the heater core.

Burned valve symptoms?

Engine miss, poor fuel economy, loss of power, and low compression on the cylinder with the burnt valve.

Will you do more damage to your car if you drive it after it has undergone water damage?

Usually no. Usually, driving with the climate control set to defrost and the temperature set for fairly (but not all the way) high is good as it removes water from the interior.

If you own a GM vehicle, yes, as you've got a lot of corrosion in your electrical connectors. Until you get all the dash lights shut off and everything works properly for at least one year try not to drive it more than necessary. Expect a few things to stop working from time to time over the next 5 years.

Oh, and if you own a Nissan (Infiniti included) you should consider getting rid of it before the suspension and body fall apart and kill you.

How can you prolong a weak head gasket in your engine?

Have a '94 BMW 325 that was loosing a quart of coolant per 400-500 miles. It runs with a 2B radiator pressure cap (29 PSI). Engine would expel steam on start up for a minute or so through exhaust. Loosening cap about 1/8 turn reduced pressure to 10-15 PSI. and start up steaming & coolant loss stopped. Most cars will require a different cap w a lower pressure rating but this cap is threaded so loosening slightly works perfectly. Lowering pressure will allow coolant to bubble at a lower temp but systems are designed to withstand temperature extremes. At 105'F, my temp gauge still stays at normal (1/2 way). Have driven 20,000 miles under this condition without ill effect.

My opinion. If you want the engine in your car to last, STOP driving it period until you have a leaking head gasket repaired. There is no such thing as a weak head gasket. It is either doing it's job or it isn't. A leaking head gasket allows coolant to enter the combustion chamber or the oil drain holes. Either way this will contaminate your oil and cause severe wear of all engine components. Someone my tell you they drove for 20,000 miles with a bad gasket with no ill effect, but how would they know without opening the engine up? They are just kidding themselves. You will have wear and that is a fact. The only fix is to replace the head gasket and there is no other fix. Coolant and oil mixed together equals engine wear.

What are the dangers of driving with a blown head gasket?

With a blown head gasket coolant and oil mix together. This reduces the oil viscosity and can lead to bearing failures and complete engine failure. When oil gets mixed in the coolant the coolant looses its capacity to cool and the vehicle can overheat.

How does a head gasket blow?

the head gasket blown only the reason of generating high temparature between cylynder head to and head asseymbly.one of that coolant level low,and radiator cap vaccum valve broken,or any coolant hose leaking.

What causes a head gasket to blow also when buying an older car how would you check to see if the head gasket could cause a problem in the near future?

Don't know exactly what makes a head gasket blow, but a simple quick test. with engine hot remove dipstick and drop a bit of oil on hot manifold or other hot part of engine, oil will smoke and water will sizzle. Signs of water/antifreeze in oil is an indication that head gasket is leaking

How do you change a stem valve for a price pfister faucet 2 handle type?

I'm assuming you have a some kind of a leak. The problem is usually caused by something called a seat. It looks like a washer; but, it's not. Because it has a square access You might need to purchase a "Faucet Valve Seat Wrench". It looks like the letter L Most hardware places will carry one. I got mine at Home Depot's. I will add more to this later. It took me months to figure what those extra washers were that came with the valve stems were. They didn't include instructions or anything.

How do you replace the head gasket in a 1991 Toyota v-6 3.0 engine you know it's difficult but any forwarnings?

The biggest warning would be, if you haven't done it before, either have someone else do it or have an experienced mechanic show you how. First, if it's overhead cam, the above advice is even MORE relevant. Next, you have to remove all of the peripheral stuff, anything that keeps you from getting the heads off. When you pull the sparkplug wires and/or distributor, make sure that you keep track of where the wires went. Also remove intake and exhaust manifolds and anything that is hanging from the heads. Pull the rocker arms and push rods (if applicable) and make sure you keep track of where they came from so that you can put them back in the same place. Pull the heads and make sure that you take them to a machine shop to have the heads resurfaced. Any time a head gasket goes, you can bet that the heads are probably warped. While the heads are there, you may as well have the valves and guides reconditioned. When you start putting it all back together, make sure that you have a calibrated torque werench and know how to use it. Follow the tightening sequence that you get from the machine shop, and don't THINK of doing it without the torque wrench. If you have hydraulic lifters, consider yourself fortunate. Put the pushrods and rocker assemblies back together. If you have MECHANICAL lifters, you get to adjust the valves, then you get to adjust them again after about 300 miles. Put the rest of it back together and hope you haven't messed anything up. OR You can take it to a shop that does this kind of thing. It will cost you a lot, maybe more than the vehicle is worth, but at least it will work when you're done.
