How long can someone live with congestive heart failure. He has an enlarged heart twice the normal size a defibrillator and prescribed warafrin after ekg 1mth ago and still smokes and drinks.?

Persons with CHF can have a normal life span. An echocardiogram which is a simple non-invasive test can diagnose the severity of the CHF by examining the chambers of the heart and the overall strength of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy with enlarged heart times 2 is pretty serious. Smoking and drinking severely weakens the heart in general, and life expectancy depends on amount consumed/ smoked. warfarin is prescribed for dysrythmia for prevention of clot formation, but a person should not be drinking on it as it thins the blood and can cause complications such as hemmorhagic stroke, or internal bleeding elsewhere in the body. A defibrillator is only effective in life threatening dysrythmia and will not prevent further heart failure. By my best estimate as a past cardiac nurse, I'd say the person has 2 years maximum, sooner if the person is decompensated and requires frequent hospitalizations for excacerbations of symptoms ( severe swelling in ankles and feet, sudden weight gain, shortness of breath especially when lying down, anxiety++).

How does the progression of atherosclerosis leads to heart attack-?

The progression of atherosclerosis leads to heart attack when the artery wall thickens as a result of the accumulation of white blood cells.

What is a heart attack and what causes a heart attack?

The heart is a muscle, and like all muscles, it needs oxygen to survive. When the blood flow that brings this oxygen to the heart is severely reduced or cut off completely, this causes a heart attack. The blood circulation to the heart is slowed or stopped because of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the arteries. Together, these substances are called plaque. The process of plaque forming and hardening the arteries is called atherosclerosis. When a piece of plaque breaks off in the arteries, blood clots may form. The narrowed arteries and the blood clots prevent blood from flowing through the heart. The heart is then starved of oxygen and nutrients, and this is called ischemia. This in turn causes damage or death to parts of the heart. The American Heart Association says that every 34 seconds, someone in the US has a heart attack.

To prevent a heart attack, you would need to lower your heart attack risk from narrow arteries, being overweight or having high blood pressure.

Define microshock and how defibrillator would be used to treat?

lMicroshock is a risk in patients with intracardiac conductors, such as external pacemaker electrodes or saline filled catheters, within the heart. A current as low as 10uAmps directly through the heart, may send a patient directly into Ventricular Fibrillation. For example a patient is holding onto his/her bed with left hand and reaches out with right hand and touches a device that has a broken wire inside of it and that wire is touching the inside case of said device. This would cause the person to receive a microshock and possibly send them into V-fib. A defibrillator can be used after a person receives a microshock and they go into V-fib. In V-fib the heart is not pumping blood to a person organs, the heart is fluttering instead of beating. The purpose of a defibrillator is to stop the heart, and hopefully if the heart is healthy enough it will start up into a life sustaining rythem. The following is what v-fib looks like on an ECG.

Will high fructose cause heart disease?

Will children of a person with heart disease also get heart disease?

well heart disease can be passed down in the family, there are ways that you can minimise the risks of heart disease and also have a healthy diet especially for children as they need a healthy diet as they are growing up. If you choose fruit and vegetables daily then you will minimise this risk. Fatty foods will block the arteries leading to high colesterol and heart attacks and strokes. Also eccessive drinking and smoking will cause heart disease in any event. Not all children who's parent have heart disease will get it, it all comes down to healthy eating and staying active.

How is peak flow affected by a heart attack?

Peak flow is interrupted by heart attack. Peak flow is realized when all systems are go, the action of the unimpeded vessels and the blood being pumped by the heart. When the heart stops as in an attack, this flow is greatly diminished. The injured heart may never again regain the peak flow.

When is a implantable cardioverter defibrillator used to treat arrhythmias?

a treatment for serious arrhythmias. The battery-powered device senses an abnormal heart rhythm and automatically provides electrical shock(s). The shock(s) suspends heart activity and then allows the heart to initiate a normal rhythm

For adult victims the time from arrival of the automated external defibrillator to the first shock should be no more than how many seconds?

There is no definite answer. The current guidelines are:

For a witnessed cardiac arrest (you saw it happen):

Establish responsiveness

Call 911, immediately begin CPR, attach AED as soon as possible

For an unwitnessed cardiac arrest:

Establish responsiveness

Immediately begin CPR/have someone else call 911, administer 5 cycles/2 minutes of CPR prior to attaching the AED.

DO NOT attach an AED for a child of less than 1 year of age.

Does a pulse oximeter help people with history of heart attacks?

No, a pulse oximeter does not help people with history of heart attacks. In fact, it may worsen it. A pulse oximetry changes the rate of the pulses, which may develop and contribute to a heart attack.
