Vasco de Gama was an explorer from Portugal who was a commander on the first ships to sail from Europe to India. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer credited with discovering the New World. Marco Polo was a merchant from Italy known for his vast travels and explorations in Asia. Finally, Prince Henry the Navigator was from Portugal and is known for his development of maritime trade and European exploration.

That should be Columbus not Magellan. Magellan did not sail until 1519. Furthermore Columbus only crossed the Atlantic.

Francis Drake was the second person to lead an expedition in circumnavigating the world.

Because of him, Portugal became the first country to explore. If he didn't start the "school of navigation" there would be no exploration. So he is the most important.

Prince Henry [b. March 4, 1394] of Portugal died on November 13, 1460. The place of death was his residence, Vila do Infante, in Sagres in the Algarve Region. Sagres Point [Ponta de Sagres] was a favored point of departure for sailors because it offered safe shelter for ships awaiting favorable winds.

Prince Henry the Navigator was born in 1394 and passed away in 1460. He was most famous for financing voyages along the coast of Africa. Prince Henry the Navigator never went on this voyage he only helped with funding.

Prince Henry was the youngest son of Portugal's King John I and Queen Phillipa, so he would never rule his country. Instead, he began to sail to Africa to discover a sea route to different lands. He never found it, but made a huge impact on geographic knowledge at the time. He also wanted to spread Christianity to distant lands. He converted Native African tribes. All his ships depicted a red cross on the sails.

Establishment of a government-sponsored institute at Sagres, which maintained a school, an observatory, and a base for exploratory ventures at nearby Lagos. Books and charts were collected in a library and reports were solicited from contemporary travelers. 6. Henry the Navigator (a strange name really for a man who never set foot on a ship to sail the oceans) basically had three goals for the expeditions he sent out: converting the peoples of Africa to Christianity, finding gold, and finding a way around the overland trade routes controlled by the Muslims of north Africa.

Prince Henry traveled to areas of western Africa and he also traveled to islands in the Atlantic Ocean. He was a navigator and explorer for Portugal.

He was a Portuguese prince who patronized seamen voyaging down the waest coast of Africa (as south as Cape Verde). He wanted to find a new route to the Indies. He established a school of navigation (the first and best) where navigation, astronomy, and cartography were taught. He also constructed the first observatory.

Prince Henry studied at four different schools. These schools are Wetherby School, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. He also went to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before beginning his military career.
