Henry the Navigator (a strange name really for a man who never set foot on a ship to sail the oceans) basically had three goals for the expeditions he sent out: converting the peoples of Africa to Christianity, finding gold, and finding a way around the overland trade routes controlled by the Muslims of north Africa.

Prince Henry never went deep water! he stayed home and held the fort- or rather Palace, nonetheless he encouraged exploratory navigation and founded a Nautical academy for explorers and navigator. He himself was, err, Ground-bound but did encourage navigation, hence the nickname. He is still a historically popular King or Prince with the Portuguese.
