Herbert Hoover

Hoover did not believe that the government should lead the way to end the economic depression.

Herbert Hoover's parents were Jesse Hoover and Hulda Minthorn Hoover. Jesse Hoover was a blacksmith and farm implement store owner, while Hulda Minthorn was a devout Quaker. They raised Herbert Hoover in West Branch, Iowa, where he was born in 1874. Hoover's parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and Quaker values that influenced his later career in public service.

He was held in fairly high regard in Europe due to his relief efforts following World War I.

In the US, enough people thought well of him to get him elected President in 1932. His popularity (at least in the US) declined dramatically after 1933, though, due to the onset of the Great Depression. It remained low during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, due at least partly to him being used as a convenient scapegoat.

After World War II, his image was rehabilitated somewhat.

Herbert Hoover never really had one home. he traveled the world as consulting mining engineer . However when they were not traveling Herbert Hoover lived in London. He also lived on the Stanford University campus where he had once been a student, for several years. His house on campus is now the home of the Stanford president. He was born in Iowa and moved to Oregon to live with his uncle after his parents died. He lived in Washington, DC while he was Secretary of Commerce.

Herbert believed in the Constitution and tried to enforce the laws made by Congress, including immigration law. Illegal aliens were deported according to the law by his administration.

Herbert Hoover stayed in the background during FDR's administration because they did not get along. He did work for Harry Truman helping to feed German children after WW2 ended. He also headed the Hoover Commission to look into government waste. He also wrote a book on Woodrow Wilson and raised money for the Boys Club of America.

Anyone who rises to the position of President of the United States has to have lots of friends, allies, and, unfortunately, enemies.

Hoover did not hold office in any state. He lived several places. He was born in Iowa but moved to Oregon as a boy. His adult US home was in California. He lived in London for several years. He retired to New York City.

Hoover went to the Friends Pacific Academy in Newberg, Oregon for two years. Then then took the college entrance exams at newly formed Stanford College, but failed all but math. He took some college prep. classes at Palo Alto, Cal. , took the exams again and passed, becoming the youngest student in the first graduating class at Stanford at age 17. He never graduated from high school.

Roosevelt believed that the federal government should control the economy, provide jobs for people out of work, provide social security for old people and others unable to work, spend large sums on new domestic programs and to participate actively in foreign conflicts. Hoover believed that federal government should be limited to the powers granted to it by the US Constitution.

Coolidge declined to run for a third term, saying that 10 years in the presidency was too much for one person, also noting the amount of personal emotional strain that the office of the presidency took. He left at the end of his elected term, on 1929 March 4.

A return to normalcy

Hoover was a good student, a very successful mining engineer who set up a successful engineering firm. Later he was successful in establishing an operation to send food to Belgium which was blockaded by the Germans during WW I.

Herbert Hoover won the 1928 presidential election defeating Alfred Smith. In the 1928 presidential election Herbert Hoover received 444 electoral votes and Alfred Smith received 87 electoral votes. The popular vote totals were Hoover 21,437,277 and Smith 15,007,698.

President Hoover did not believe that charity from the government would help people become employed. He did invest in the infrastructure of the United States to create more jobs.
