Hoover, as the 31st president and a member of the Republican Party, served just one term from 1929-1933. Before his presidency, he served as Secretary of Commerce under Republican Calvin Coolidge (1923-1928). However, during his term, he did little to help support homeless and unemployed families around the country during the Great Depression. As a result, shanty towns in big cities were nicknamed "Hoovervilles", while pockets empty of money were called "Hoover flags". He sought for reelection in 1932 but lost in a landslide to Democratic candidate Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

He believed that by helping businesses , he was also helping individuals.

The bonus army was led by Walter W. Waters, and Douglas MacArthur led the infantry and calvary against them under the order of Herbert Hoover. MacArthur also commanded the 6 tanks involved in the attack.

Part Of President Hoover's Plan for the great depression was tou cut 160million taxes dougled amout spent on public work. He urged state & local government to accelerate their spendings and also he,approveda programin which the federal gov. had a few buildings built.

In the 1932 presidential election Franklin Roosevelt received 472 electoral votes (89%) and Herbert Hoover received 59 electoral votes (11%). The popular vote totals were Roosevelt 22,829,501 and Hoover 15,760,684. Socialist Party candidate Norman Thomas received 884,781 popular votes for President, but no electoral votes.

Hoover tried to combat the depression with public works projects including the Hoover Dam. He also used government enforced efforts, tariffs, and an increase in corporate taxes and taxes for the top tax bracket.

When President Hoover ordered that the Bonus Army be dispersed in 1932, his public image was damaged. Hoover ordered that WW1 veterans, who were protesting outside federal buildings in Washington, DC be removed by soldiers of the Army. These protesting veterans were called the Bonus Army because they wanted immediate cash redemption for their service certificates. In 1924, Congress voted to give a bonus to WW1 veterans, but they needed to wait until 1945 to collect these bonuses. However, due to the Depression, many veterans were unemployed and so wanted their bonuses early.

He used the military to disperse protesters.

Hoover did not believe that the government should lead the way to end the economic depression.

Two of the reasons Herbert Hoover ran for President of the USA are # The leaders and a majority of the Republican Party asked him to, because Calvin Coolidge declined to run for re-election, and, # He believed the Republicans were in a better position to foster a pro-business climate in government, and this drew Southern support away from the Democrats.

He was held in fairly high regard in Europe due to his relief efforts following World War I.

In the US, enough people thought well of him to get him elected President in 1932. His popularity (at least in the US) declined dramatically after 1933, though, due to the onset of the Great Depression. It remained low during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, due at least partly to him being used as a convenient scapegoat.

After World War II, his image was rehabilitated somewhat.

Herbert Hoover never really had one home. he traveled the world as consulting mining engineer . However when they were not traveling Herbert Hoover lived in London. He also lived on the Stanford University campus where he had once been a student, for several years. His house on campus is now the home of the Stanford president. He was born in Iowa and moved to Oregon to live with his uncle after his parents died. He lived in Washington, DC while he was Secretary of Commerce.

Herbert believed in the Constitution and tried to enforce the laws made by Congress, including immigration law. Illegal aliens were deported according to the law by his administration.

Herbert Hoover stayed in the background during FDR's administration because they did not get along. He did work for Harry Truman helping to feed German children after WW2 ended. He also headed the Hoover Commission to look into government waste. He also wrote a book on Woodrow Wilson and raised money for the Boys Club of America.

Anyone who rises to the position of President of the United States has to have lots of friends, allies, and, unfortunately, enemies.

Hoover did not hold office in any state. He lived several places. He was born in Iowa but moved to Oregon as a boy. His adult US home was in California. He lived in London for several years. He retired to New York City.
