What adaptations does a shore crab need to survive in a rock pool?

Why is molting necessary for arthropds growth?

Moulting (ecdysis) is the most convenient strategy for an arthropod organism's growth owing to the rigidity of the exoskeleton. If it were less inelastic it could potentially be stretched or enlarged by other means.

Moulting also seems to be exploited by many arthropod species for limb or process regrowth after amputation.

Will a hermit crab survive if the pincher comes off?

It would depend on why it came off, and that question can be hard to answer. If it came off because of stress, the crab is usually too far gone to recover, and will keep losing limbs until it dies.

If it came off because of a fight, the crab has a good chance of living as long as the environment in your habitat is suitable for the crab to recover in. This means deep, moist sand, proper heat and humidity, etc.

If it came off because the crab was stuck somewhere and broke it in attempt to free itself, the crab will probably be just fine. See above paragraph to make sure you have decent conditions.

If the crab lost it in a bad molt, it will probably survive. See two paragraphs up.

As long as the crab has one claw, it will eat just fine, and will regrow it in the next molt so long as your conditions allow the molt to be successful.

Can you tell the approximate age of a model 311A Stevens 20ga?

As far as I'm aware, they've made them forever. Get the serial number off it and go to the Stevens part of this website and post the q-somebody will know. As far as the gun itself goes, it is a highly sought after but not very valuable arm...enjoy it and don't bother trying for money. Marked as a 311, it was made after 1941. Same gun was the 5000 in the 20's and a 5100 in the 30's. It was made until about 1988 or 89 but if it has no serial number it was made before 1969.

How do you bath a crab?

I personally suggest you don't. Have a dish of salt water your crab can bath in. Insure the water isn't to deep. Just deep enough to cover to majority of there body, not submerge them. Place your crab in the water once so it knows were it is. If it runs out let it, your crab will bath when it needs a bath.
