Who is more deserving of the title founder of Singapore Crawfurd Raffles or Farquhar?
I think that the founding of Singapore should not be based on just one of the three men: Stamford Raffles, William Farquhar or John Crawfurd. I think that the founding of Singapore should be credited to all the three men and all the others that helped them found Singapore. Raffles came up with the idea of turning Singapore into a successful trading port of the British, Farquhar helped develop Singapore and governed it through its early years, while Crawfurd helped to turn Singapore into a British colony so the British could fully enjoy the benefits the port could offer, such as increased autonomy to make decisions to get more revenue from Singapore as a trade port. Without any one of the three men, Singapore would not have become what it was today. It was the combined effort of these three men that turned Singapore into such a successful and popular port. Each of them had their own contribution to founding Singapore, and each of their contributions is valuable in its own way. Without even one of these men, Singapore would still be a sleepy fishing village. Without Raffles's vision that Singapore would someday be a successful port, Singapore would not have been developed by the British at all as it had no apparent potential at that time. Without Farquhar, Singapore would not have survived through its first difficult years as a new nation, and would have collapsed along with the British's dream of finding a viable trade port to facilitate trade between India and China. Without Crawfurd, Singapore would still be under Malay control, and the port might just have ended when Raffles passed on after firing Farquhar. In conclusion, I feel that these three men, and not forgetting all those that contributed to the founding of Singapore, should all be credited with the founding of Singapore and given the respect they deserve for completely redesigning Singapore and turning it from an obscure and sleepy fishing village to a bustling trade port.

Why did sang nila utama name Singapore Singapore?
he named Singapore Singapore according to this legend...
when he was escaping from some people (forgot who :P) on a ship, he saw what his servant believed was a lion on an island where the sand was as white as cloth. he went onto the island andd named it singapore. more into it, 'singa' is Malay for lion and i think the other part of it (unsure of origin of word) means port. he used to set up ports and harbours for trading to take place.
And THAT, my friend, is how Singapore got her name :D
