A draft horse is a large horse bred for hard, heavy tasks such as ploughing and farm labour. It is called the draught horse in the United Kingdom. The Anglo-saxon called the Dray horse meaning to haull. They weigh 1,600 pounds or better and stand at least 16 hands high from ground to withers.

The ancestors of the draft horse came from Europe. Remeber the names I gave you and the countries. The draft horse is the American breed of this horse.

Arabians horses in my experience are the best family horses because they are strong, sweet, and controllable.

There are actually many horse breeds that are fine family horses. You will find very nice horses from many different breeds. I have Percherons, quarter horses, mustangs, thoroughbreds, and morgans. You can find calm horses in just about any breed. Personally, I would tend to go toward lower maintenance horses, such as mustangs, quarter horses or morgans. These tend to have fewer problems with bone structure and almost zero foot problems.

Thoroughbreds tend to be higher maintenance horses and can be high strung. If you are unsure of any horse, lease it for awhile before you buy.

If you follow the main route of I-95 north then it is roughly 1100 miles from the New Jersey border to the Florida border. By car this would be about a 17 hour drive, by horse it will be far longer.

Depending on the way you use the horse for transportation will also vary the length of your journey.

If you go by horseback and use the same horse it will take you almost 10 days to get from one place to the other, and that's if you trade out for a fresh horse when needed and don't stop. But you will need to stop to sleep and eat and go to the bathroom, as will the horses. So you can add another few days to that and make it an even 2 weeks.

It will take longer if you go by carriage as the horse will have a heavier load to transport.

Lunging is one of the first training steps with young horses. It helps them become more coordinated. It is also useful for any age horse for improving the human/horse bond. The human is working with the horse from the ground, asking the horse to do various commands, and the horse and human are at the same level. I think it truly helps both the horse and human learn to trust each other (my personal opinion).

It also is definitely useful in strengthening an injured horse, working on flexibility, warms them up, and stretches them out. I personal believe it's one of the most important things a human and horse should do together (AND OFTEN)!
