How can your body produce antibodies against dead viruses?

A virus doesn't have to be alive for the body to produce antibodies against it. Antibodies recognize the physical appearance of a virus. If your body is full of antibodies from a recent bout of chickenpox could you still come down with the flu?

Yes. The antibodies are very specific to each type of infection. So, the chicken pox antibodies would not be any protection against influenza viruses, and you could still come down with the flu if exposed to that virus. Ask the doctor who has treated the chicken pox when it would be okay to get a vaccination against the flu after the chicken pox.

This sounds pretty gross and I apologize but I just sneezed and a round grey solid piece of something fell out of my mouth it had a foul smell What was it Should I worry?

Sound to me like it's either a piece of decomposing food that could have been lodged in your teeth or mouth, or it could have been mucus. Sometimes mucus that you normally blow out your nose can drip down your throat and then come out your mouth. Have you been sick or had tonsilitis recently, cous sometimes it can cause mucus chunks. If you feel unwell or have other serious illness consult your doctor but I think you're gonna be okay, that happened to me once and I'd had tonsilitis the week before. I coughed up a yucky chunk. Hope it helps some, if not then try googling some more.

Can you selectively shut off immune responses?

Some medications are selectively designed to shut off immune responses, such as Rhogam in pregnant women with a negative blood type (to keep the body from attacking positive fetal blood cells). Anti-histamines are another way to prevent immune responses.

There are other anti-immune drugs such as ones that fight off inflammation due to arthritis. Care has to be taken using some of these drugs so that the body isn't totally shut down to fight off infections.
