Intrauterine Devices (IUDs)

IUDs, or intrauterine devices, are an increasingly popular option for birth control. This category includes questions about Mirena, Paragard, and other IUDs or coils.

How can Mirena get dislodged?

Signs that an IUD is not in the right place include absent strings, longer or shorter strings, bleeding after sex or discomfort during sex, the ability to feel the end or the device at the opening to your cervix, and that old classic, and IUD in your underwear.

Can you become pregnant if your IUD is out of place?

Yes. The IUD is effective when it's in the right place, at the top of the uterus. If it comes partially or completely out of the uterus, you can get pregnant.

Can an IUD make you feel pregnant?

The symptoms of pregnancy - fatigue, nausea, frequent urination - are nonspecific, and women (and men) may feel them quite often without being pregnant. If you think you're pregnant, take a pregnancy test.

Where can you get your IUD removed without insurance?

Your local family planning office can remove your IUD, most likely on a sliding-scale fee based on your income.

Does alcohol affect Mirena?

Alcohol does not affect how well Mirena works.

Can you do jumping jacks with an IUD?

Yes, jumping jacks, skydiving, horseback riding, and operating a jackhammer will not affect the IUD.

(OK, I have to say this. There's an old joke: "Doctor, will I be able to play the piano after the operation?" "Yes, of course you can!" "That's funny, I never could play before!" So, assuming you could do jumping jacks before the IUD, there's no reason you can't do them after the IUD.)

Do antibiotics affect mirena?

I'm pretty sure they do not. I used to have Mirena earlier this year, and I was told that after it was inserted, I could completely forget about it until the 5th year, which is when it should be removed.
No, antibiotics DO NOT affect Mirena.

Does the IUD affect future fertility?

Some women get pregnant within weeks of the due date of their next injection; for others, it may take up to 18 months. The average time until return to fertility is 11 months. The length of time a woman uses depo doesn't seem to make a difference in how long it takes to conceive. After the 18 months have passed, women get pregnant at the same rate as women who have never used Depo Provera; it has no long-term effect on fertility.

While you can go on the birth control pill to have a monthly withdrawal bleed, going on the birth control pill will not help you get pregnant faster after Depo Provera. There is no special "cleansing regimen" that will help you get pregnant faster.

I was on depo for 2 years after my daughter was born in 1994 (which was an accident after missing 2 pills... so no problems there!), it took another 5 years after coming off depo using no contraception to get my son, and I haven't used contraception since and have not fallen pregnant. So I'd say yes it's definitely possible. Sorry:o( Good luck though, I hope you're lucky. Good luck trying. I had one shot in 1999 and I still havent had a regular period or been able to get pregnant. I get 3 periods a year and I have been recently diagnosed with endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and although my doctor cant prove it, he suspects it was triggered by taking depo-provera. Two surgeries later and lots of meds, and nothing has changed. I hope everything works out for you though. Good luck.

: How long does it take to get it out of your system?? My best friend got the shot a few times and SEVEN years later of trying to conceive is unsuccessful. : YOU CAN BECOME STERILE. I was so mad on behalf of my friend that I did a load of research about this drug and am officially disgusted what women go through for the "convenience" of this anti-conception injection. I feel angry that pharmaceutical companies gloss over very real side-effects. : You can loose your bone density, increase your chances of cervical cancer, migraines, ectopic pregnancy, and anemia, among other things. I recommend reviewing all sides of a drug like this before taking it, not just the information offered by the doctor who will forget your name when you leave the office, or may have personal bias regarding general population trends. : This is not a safe drug in my opinion. It has not been reported. When you get off depo provera it could take up to a year just to become pregnant. This is normal and your bodys way of adjusting to normal again because when you are on birth control it makes your body believe that it is pregnant. I have heard that it can cause sterilization. Never met anyone it happened to though.. It took 15 mths for me to get pregnant w/my son after stopping the depo.. So if your trying.. keep up the faith.. :) Hi, I haven't heard of the DEPO causing fertility problems in women. Fertility problems are usually caused by a variety of things so if you're worried, then please see your doctor for a check up.

it took me 3years to conceive once i stopped taking the depo and i have been on it again but stopped a year ago and still waiting to conceive again i will not be going back on it again as takes to long for your body to get back to normal.

No. It may take 6-18 months to get your period back but you should be able to conceive again. Every woman is different. My friend was on it for 6 years and she got her period back and was pregnant 7 months after stopping the shot. I stopped taking the shot in November 2010 and got my period back in March 2011, I am now ttc.

Is my chances of getting pregnant higher than average after removal of my 3 year IUD?

Yes, the IUD does not affect future fertility. If you don't want to get pregnant, be sure to use an alternate method.

Can your IUD come out?

If your partner feels the IUD strings, there is no cause for concern. if your partner feels part of the plastic of the IUD, the IUD is being expelled and you are at risk for pregnancy. Consider using emergency contraception if you've had sex in the last five days, and contact your health care provider for an immediate appointment. Use a backup method of birth control until you get checked.

How soon after your IUD is 10 years must you remove it?

If you leave the copper IUD in too long, there are no potential health problems. If you leave a hormonal IUD like Mirena in too long, you may not be protected against pregnancy, but there are no other risks.

Do your chances of getting pregnant increase the longer you have an IUD in?

Getting pregnant on the pill is unfortunately not that difficult. Miss a pill, or be on a pill that does not contain a high enough dose of hormones for your body and it's about like taking a sugar pill everyday.

Except in some drug interactions, the amount of hormone is always strong enough to be used as contraception. Otherwise, sometimes the amount of hormones isn't appropriated and you experiment some side effects. In those cases, changing for a different pill would be preferable (we might say "this pill wasn't strong enough for you"... but that NEVER means that you were at risk for getting pregnant). The most common factor is when you miss a pill.

IUD's work by not allowing a fertilized egg to implant in the uterine wall. The fact you got pregnant on the pill is not actually going to have an effect on how an IUD works. However I strongly suggest that you discuss all the risks of IUD's with your doctor because they have in some cases cause permanent damage to woman's uterus. If you intend to have children in the future this could be complicated.

Does taking St John's Wart change the effectiveness of the birth control pill?

I have heard that St. John's Wart can decrease the effectiveness of birth control as well as certain antibiotics, seizure medications, etc. on Planned Parenthood and other medical websites. If you really want to make sure you can take it without lowering the effectiveness of your birth control, I would suggest talking to your doctor. :)

Is it dangerous if your IUD slipped out?

I think it is, because of the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, and the possibility of heavier menstrual periods and cramps.

IUDs are inserted by the ob/gyn and need to be removed by the ob/gyn. Sometimes, IUDs can be expelled from the body and into the toilet.

Can you have a miscarriage when a IUD is implanted?

Yes, if you get pregnant on the IUD it needs to be removed, regardless of whether you intend to continue or terminate the pregnancy.

How effective is an IUD after 10 years?

I am not a doctor nor even a women, however if the IUD is ten years old, do you really think it's worth taking the risk? I would urge you contact your physician or a certified health care practitioner. Viper1

You have an IUD and you think you may be pregnant you have had the IUD now for about 3 month you have not had your period but you are spotting could you be pregnant?

Yes, you could be pregnant. Although the failure rate of IUDs is less than 1 in 100, it does happen. However, some IUDs, such as the Mirena coil, release hormones that generally reduce or eliminate periods. If you have one of these hormonal IUDs, it could be causing your light and missing periods. If you think you might be pregnant, take a test immediately. Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are readily accessible; however, a blood test administered by a physician would produce more reliable results.

What is the meaning of the words IUD?

What happens if you keep your IUD in longer than prescribed?

You should ask your doctor. I believe it will cause serious bleeding, and will possibly get some type of infection from it.

I left mine in for a yr and 1/2 longer than the prescribed time and i am fine i had no problems. It just becomes inactive. I did although get pregnant during that time and had it removed to avoid any complications to my pregnancy.

Should a 16 year old female use an IUD?

IUDs and contraceptive implants are recommended as first-choice methods by the American Academy of Pediatrics and ACOG. Talk with your health care provider to find out if it's a good choice for you.

How long should an IUD last before having pid?

IUDs do not cause PID. There are no health risks from leaving an IUD in place after its useful life, other than possible pregnancy in the case of a hormonal IUD.
