J C Higgins Firearms

Hello: The question of value of any firearm is contingent upon condition. If you've a Model 50 in very nice condition, it should bring $350 to 450 (US). Also, for your edification, the Model 50 was not a product of Browning, but rather Fabrique Nationale (FN). I believe the Model 53 was made by Husqvarna. The models 50 and 51 were manufactrueeby High Stadanrd using a FN manufactuerrds Mauser action. Teh Model 51-L wa made by High Standard usitn a HVA manufactrued action. Teh model 52 was made by High Standard using a Sako action. the model 53 was manufactured by Winchedter.

This is a Sears-branded Savage/Stevens/Springfield model 58 which was made from 1933 to 45. Not a collectable and bolt action shotguns are not too popular, so I'd say a $100 price would produce a quick sale but a $150 tag would sit on the shelf for a long time.

The JC Higgins name was used by Sears Roebuck from 1908 to 1961. Took a while to find a listing for this gun and the only guide I find it in is a 1983 edition, so the prices won't be much good now. It does tell me that it is a bolt action and the 583 indicates it was manufactured for Sears by either High Standard or Harrington & Richardson. Something like this would be worth up to $300 in 95% condition, with the HS name, but the Sears name will take off about $50-60, and any pitting INSIDE the barrel or chamber would take it much lower. http://www.histandard.info/PDF/Sears%20CF%20Rifles.pdf

This was a trade name made for Belknap Hardware, and from the list of makers (Crescent, H&R, Stevens) it's unlikely to be a high quality gun, but I could be wrong. The plating and engraving were probably not factory original. If this is a double barrel, the usual quote is $150-$250, and for a single shot, $35-$75.

Do you know the model name or number? I'm guessing it is a single shot Champion valued from $25 for a parts gun to $125 in Excellent condition with a plain rib. The version with a matte rib runs about $25 higher and the Trap Grade with a ventilated rib ranges from $100 to $275. Double barrel guns will be higher.

marlin made afew of there rifles Dozens of US manufacturers and some foreign companies have made guns marked with various Sears trade names. I doubt if a complete list can ever be compiled, but some of the major US companies include Crescent, Davenport, Fyrberg, Meriden (owned by Sears), Iver Johnson, J. Stevens, Savage, Harrington & Richardson, Marlin, and High Standard. Many Sears shotguns in the 1950's to 80's were actually Winchester products. From the late 1800's to about WWI, many were imported from Belgium.

$75 to $125, less if busted or rusted, more if like new.

Even if the kit is complete and in good to fair condition it's value is probable $12.00 to $ 15.00. If the cardboard box is the packaging, meaning the kit itself is still in the original "metal" container....it may be worth about 10% more, possibly $16.50 at the most.

The 583.72 indicates that this is a High Standard product and the cross-over list points to the Model 10, but the Blue Book doesn't list that model number. The JC Higgins name was dropped in 1961 when Sears bought Ted Williams name.

The cross over list is incorrect. High Standard made no rifles with their own name at that time. The Sears paid High Standard to design and tool this model for production and Sears was the exclusive customer.

The Model 45 is the same gun as the Marlin Model 336C. Pricing on the Sears model would be approx. 10%-20% less than the Marlin.

Your gun was made by High standard for Sears who owned all of their shotgun prodution at that time your gun eas made in 1947 It has limited abough 50 to 100 dollars depending on who whants it and condition

your shotgun was made for High Standard /Sears Roebuck by Harrington & Richardson in 1945 It first appeared in the spring Sears catalog 1946 .Your gun is gun is what is known as as a pre model 10 thes guns are very scarce and the few JC Higgins collectors out there pay highly for ones in good shape Its basicly a H&R model 120 Sears bought the rights to manufacture these guns in 1946. In 1948/49 High Standard took over manufacture of these guns and they became Known as the J C Higgins model 10. .The early ones like yours are quite rare..They are excellent shotguns

Bolt action shotguns in usable condition will retail for $100 - $125. They could have been made anytime from 1908 to 1960. With the rest of the markings on the gun, we might be able to identify the actual manufacturer's model number and determine a range of dates when that model was produced.

It was probably made from 1950 to 1954 built by Husqvarna in Sweden. Very nicely made gun. In top shape you could get up towards $700. Most people don't know what they are and are confussed by the high price but I assure you if you have one it is worth holding on to.

The Model 51-L first appeared in the Sears 1959 Fall & Winter Catalog and last appeared in 1963 Fall & Winter catalog. The Model 51-L was made by High Stadnard unsing the HVA acion. Prior to the Model 51-L, High Stadanrd made the Model 50 and Model 51 which were based on the FN manufactureed Mauser designed action.

If it was made before midnight, December 31, 1968, it didn't need one and probably doesn't have one. If it was made later, it should be easily found somewhere on the receiver.

In 90-95% condition, these generally sell for $150-$175. sales@countrygunsmith.net
