What model what is the sears code and model JC Higgins was a Sears & roebuck brand name They sold guns with this name brand from 1946 to to 1962 depending on the sears code it was made some were in that time period .With out the Sears code no. there is no way to determine value

I too would like some information regarding a 20 gauge J. Stevens Arms Company 'Springfield' double barrel shotgun, the only other markings are 5000 on the right side plate and a circled 22 near the trigger guard.

The Winchester Model 12 was never sold under the JC Higgins name.

As I remember, High Standard made most of the rimfire revolvers that I saw in the Sears catalogs of the day. That would be in the early to mid sixties, I guess. They had quite a variety. I hope that helps some, anyway. However, there might well have been other manufacturers whose handguns were listed as well. If it was a nine shot, and it was assembled with pins instead of screws, it was quite possibly made by High Standard. I can't recall if they called themselves Hi Standard or not. High Standard did indeed manufacture the Sears provate labebed J. It was made by High Standard in 1961. It shipped from High Standard as a catalog number 130 on 7/5/1963 Onother gun inthat shipment was serial number 629, 060 whis probably in inventory in mid 1957 . Some guns hung around in inventory for quite a while before shipping.

This gun would have been manufactured by High Standard, but I cannot cross reference it to a particular model. With the HS name it would retail for something between $200 and $400. With the Sears trade name it is likely to be one of the lower priced HS models and would retail for about $150-$200 actually Sears and Roebuck owned all of High Standards rifle and shotgun productio back in the late 40s to the early 60s as Sears also owned a sizable part of High standard in Fact the President of High Standard was a Sears Vice president 583 code actually means Sears House brand Not High Standard product owned and made exclusivly by Sears. High standard was not allowed by their contract and agreement to sell rifles or shotguns on their own until 1962 as Sears owned these models. Model 66 shotgun was definitly designed and made by High standard as the model 20 pump However the bolt action was designed by H&R and more than half of them 583 1 to 583 13 were made by H&R For High Standard . Basicly what I am trying to say is that the model 66 is Exclusive Sears product made by and for them As High Standard was infact a division of Sears during the fifties .the guns marked J C Higgins 583 were not High Standards secound quality it was the only shotguns and rifles they made by High Standard and at the time they were Sears top quality and were actually better than most of their compition

Would need a little more information, like manufacturer and model for starters. But for any useable shotgun, you can go to Walmart and locate the least expensive new gun with the same action type and figure your used gun is worth from 1/2 to 2/3 of its price.

I was 5 years old in 1957 when my Dad helped me hold and aim his J C Higgins model 36 22cal rifle (which I own today). When I was about 12 years old I asked him when he got his rifle. Firearms made before the 1968 Gun Control Act were not required to have a serial number- most of the Sears/ JC Higgins did not. Most of the bolt action 20 from Sears have a value of ABOUT $100 or so, depending on condition, bells and whistles, etc. You may want to talk with your insurance carrier- especially of you have replacement cost coverage- and come to an agreement with your carrier of buying a replacement gun of LIKE QUALITY- even if it is not the exact same gun. Take at look at the shotguns offered for sale at a couple of the internet auction sites- www.auctionarms.com, and www.gunbroker.com- you may find a photo of one that looks like yours, and can give you a better feel for pricing. When talking to your insurance company, remember that you may have to pay SHIPPING, and may have to pay a BACKGROUND CHECK fee when replacing your gun. Here in VA its only a couple of bucks, in some states, it may be $25 or so. Good luck

J.C. Higgins is an old brand name used by Sears.

J.C. Higgins shotguns were sold by Sears but made by different manufacturers.

I own that very shotgun, the model 21. I purchased a left hand safety for mine in about 1970 from a parts catalog for a High Standard that a friend had puchase. I can't tell you though if the model 20 is the same. The 21 is a variable choke slide action. I have never had a problem with it. Yes, there has been a recall on the 12 ga. guns for several years. I personally have sent in 3 bolts. The model numbers are 583.13 through 583.22. You can find info on where to call by typing in J.C. Higgins recall on a search engine. I believe it is 800 817-9165. I don't know if the recent merger has any effect on this rebate. The recall is baseless. It was the result of a person who was injured when he opened the bolt of of a model 10 jc Higgins 583 3 12 gauge bolt action shotgun . The defect was not a result of actually firing,or the gun blowing up. The problem was that the bolt stop screw had been stripped wich allowed the bolt to come out. The shooter pulled the bolt out so fast and hard that it came out the gun and struck him in the eye. This accident was actually the falt of user . He should have not used the gun with stripped or missing bolt stop screw.If he did he should of atleast been a little more carefull. Any gun no matter how well made can be dangerous when put in service with defects . Sears recalled the guns to protect them selves. The model 10 was Sears own product they had bought the rights to manufacture the from Harrington & Richardson .H&R actually made almost the same model before WW2. It was known as m H&R 120 gamester. For Sears they were called 105 Ranger. After WW2 Sears bought the H&R Riesing pattent and had High Standard manufacture an improved version under the JC Higgins name [sears owned a good size part of High standard back then] the model 10 was made from 1945 to 1956 .In good condition they are one of the best bolt action shotguns ever made, and of higher quality than any thing in their class. They are very strong and safe shotguns. Sears is no longer buying bolts or reclling them no one knows how many perfectly good shotguns were ruined buy one mans stupidity .My advice would be If you have one have it checked by a compitent gun smith and enjoy it. They are old fashioned classics and still good hunters

No. They have you return the bolt so the gun can no longer be fired. They'll send you $160, which is about twice the value of a utility grade bolt action shotgun.

As of 2005, Sears is only offering a $50.00 gift card for the retun of the Shotgun bolt.

I'd like to add a few things.

Yes, there was a recall, however the recall was only done by Sears. This shotgun was also sold as the J.C. Higgins Model 10 and the High Standard Model 10. Neither J.C. Higgins or High Standard participated in this voluntary recall. Only Sears...

There has always been controversy about the recall being nothing more than Sears covering their butts because of one idiot who smacked himself in the face with his own bolt. This seems to add to it because if the problem was in the gun itself both J.C. Higgins and High Standard would have had to recall the gun also. Those companies did not recall their shotguns.

There is also rumors of the bolts exploding with force into peoples faces. There is not one single shred of evidence showing that happening. Only one lawsuit by some fool who jerked his bolt out with a stripped bolt set screw and smacking himself in the face.

There is or are probably instances of a user pulling the bolt out of th receiver because of a missing screw.

Note that all the models 10, 11, and 14 all had basically the same screw and Sears only recalled some of the model 10 versions but when they did it they also included identification numbers for 16 and 20 gauge guns as well. Sears did not recall any of the model 11 or model 14 models. Note aslo that J. C. Higgins was a trade name used by Sears and the recall was for J. C. Higgins model 10 High Standard did npt market a model 10 under their own name.

The real issue is that the missing screw problem was not the only failure. There was at least one case of the receiver fractruing and allowing the bolt free to travel to the rear. I have photos from theHGigh Stadanrd factroy of at least one of these failures. I also have a copy of a December 1959 failure reportt for a Moeld 10 #583.16 where the locking areas of the recircer was broken off and the secondary locking lug sheared off.

Note that when the recall occurred, High Standard was out of business.

The model 10 appeared in the Sears catalogs between the Spring /Summer 1946 and the Spring /Summer 1958 catalogs The MODeol 11 first appeared in the Christmas 1957 catalog.

i also have one of these sitting in front of me. they are worth around 150-200 dollars. mine is from the circa-1947 era. The Model 60 first appeared in the Sears Catalogs in the Fall/Winter 1955 catalog and the Modle 66 which superceded the model 60 first appeared in the Fall /Winter 1958 catalog. The Model 66 should have an assembly date code on the barrel.
