James A. Garfield served less than a year as the 20th President. He took office on March 4, 1881, and he died from an assassin's bullet on September 19th of the same year.

It sounds like a modern U.S. presidential one dollar coin. 1881 is the year Garfield was President, though the coin itself was minted in 2011. It's worth one dollar.

However if it has the word "assassinated" on it, the item could be a memorial token rather than a coin. That word doesn't appear on any of the presidential dollars, only the date that each person served as president.

When James Garfield was assassinated, his vice president, Chester A. Arthur, became president. Arthur did not select a vice president when he took office in 1881, and seems to have completed Garfield's term without a vice president to assist him.

James Garfield went to grade school in Orange County, Ohio, near where he lived. He spent one year at the Geauga Academy in Chester, Ohio in order to prepare to enter college.

She was at his bedside when he died.

He has been called "Boatman Jim' and "Canal Boy"because of experience as a boatman on the Ohio as a youth, and "Preacher President" because of his time as a lay preacher. None of these titles or nicknames are widely used.

James Garfield believed in transparency and honesty in political officers. He made it a point that he was going to clean up the spoil system of federal employment. He was killed by a disappointed federal officer seeker.

Garfield was elected in November 1880, and was sworn in on March 4, 1881. He was shot on July2, 1881, not even four months after taking office. He lingered until September 19 before he died. Garfield would have been easily saved today - an X-ray would find the bullet in his body (his doctors never could, but infected him probing for it, very painfully) and a simple surgery would fix him right up.

Garfield went to the Eclectic Institute (now Hiram College) in Hiram Ohio for three years. He then entered Williams College in Williamstown , Mass., with junior standing and graduated with honors in 1856.
