The best one is in the shop manual. There are two different shop manuals depending the vintage of the tractor. Preside console or side console (split at 201,000). There is a fair on in the parts catalog and a poor one in the I&T manual. There are actually several in the early 4020 parts catalog because there were at least three variations on the wiring harnesses and connectors plus the variations for engine fuel.

My John Deere STX38 black deck would fall off every time I hit a dirt mound or unseen tree root. The two steel bars would jump over the washers above the top rear of the deck and the deck would fall to the ground. The last time it did it, it broke a one month old $40.00 belt. I fixed the problem by removing the two bolts (one on the left side, one on the right side) and replacing the two washers with larger 2" washers. I found some 1/4" x 2" washers at Ace Hardware and drilled the 1/4" holes out a little larger to fit the bolts. I actually used two of the new washers together on each bolt since two of the new ones were the same thickness as one of the old ones. The deck no longer falls off. Total cost, $1.20 at Ace Hardware.

I'm not for sure on this but my best bet would be that it should be painted red. At the factory they were painted red to sybolize "Danger-Gasoline". I know this was done for a majority of Model A tractors but I would recommend reading through a book like The John Deere Styled Letter Series or The John Deere Unstyled Letter Series both by J.R. Hobbs for the rest of the story on the Model A.

how do you tighten belt on T155 john deere

drop out the transaxle buy the 5 bolts holding it on but to get to those you will have to remove the fender by removing the 4 bolts holding it on, 2 by the engine and 2 by the seat also you will have to remove the pedals and shifting nobes. once you get the transaxle out you could drain the fluid its easiest out because you can get it all out if done right. then loosen all the bolts holding the two half's of the transaxle then take pry bars and work your way around to loosen it and once you get it apart all the gears inside will fall out so you should have a diagram so you know how it goes back together and you do that and connect the sides again and if not all gears slide back into there holes you will have to stand the transaxle up and down in like a round steal tube and take a screwdriver and pry them back into the holes then you just assemble everything back together. make shure you put a new gasket on because the old one is no good once you disassembled the transaxle.

By checking the serial number tag, you might be able to see the manufacture date typed right on the tag, located on the frame of the Gator right below the box on the vehicle's right side. If the date is not listed, write down the number and talk to your John Deere dealer to find out its date of manufacture.

Lots of john deere tech manuals are available on eBay both on CD as well as hard copies. Some of them are rather reasonable around $30 but can go as high as $300.

The one you are looking for would be TM1561 for the STX30/38/46.

The first place I'd check is on the rear of the tractor, somewhere above the PTO riveted onto the case rear of the tractor.

There is a nice Yellow Knob on the right hand side of steering wheel when you pull it out your PTO(Power Take Off) part that makes blades engage when hooked up right. To shut blades off just push know back in. Hopefully that helps and good luck with the mower. I have had mine 10 years it has never once had an issue.

Give up...it's not worth it.

Go to the place you bought it from, hopefully a John Deere dealer, and they should be able to order/make a replacement key for it. You can also try Lowe's and ask for a universal key.
