I would first check to see if there is gas getting to the carburetor, you can do this by cranking the engine while a line running to the carburetor is pulled off gas should leak out the second you start cranking. If there is no gas in the gas tank, fill the tank with gas. If there is gas in the gas tank, try changing the fuel filter, usually on the left or right side of the engine, and shaped like an acorn with two fuel lines running to it. If it is getting gas, pull the spark plugs and check to see if they are damaged. A good test to see if they are still working while they are removed from the engine, is to leave them connected to their plug wire, hold the plug wire with a pair of pliers and hold the spark plug close to a metal surface while cranking the engine. Be very careful not to get caught in any moving parts if you are doing this test. You should see a strong purple or blue spark, indicating a good plug, and good ignition coil. If no spark is seen, try replacing the plugs first, as it is an easy fix. If you have good spark and good fuel, all that's left is "air". Check your air filter, if it is plugged, blow it out with compressed air from the inside out, but be careful not to damage the filter. You can also check the compression of the engine cylinders using a compression tester. It screws into the same port as the spark plug (when the plug is removed). You should see above 90psi compression with a cold engine. If that doesn't work, there are several things to check, but they are quite labor intensive, i.e electrical tests. Another good idea is to contact you local JD dealer and ask them what else you could check if the spark test or compression test doesn't fix your issue. I don't think it will be a safety switch because all safety switches on deere equipment will not let the engine crank if they notice they are open, for example the seat switch will not let the engine crank until it closes from the weight of the operator. In my experience, these units have had their ignition components fail due to heat and vibration.

My LX 277 did the same thing. I tried new plugs, cleaning the carb, still acted up. Turned out to be a bad ignition coil. Replaced it and it's been running great.

When mine did this, I was able to fix it by fixing the gap of the valve rocker arm, and running high grade 91+ gasoline through it (one tank). Figure out which cylinder is the problem by alternately disconnecting the spark plug wires. The rocker arms are under the aluminum colored cover that has OHV stamped on it. You should use a feeler gauge to check and set the gap. Good luck

First thing to check is the gas cap.

Make sure that the small hole in the cap is clear. If the air can't get in the gas can't get out.

the answer to this question is yes but the back tabs off of the deck on the 165hydro have got to be welded on to the deck of the stx38 and the back attachment rods have got to have another hole drill in the end and two spacer blocks (one each side) of two inch square tubing must be fabed to move the location out father apart because the 165 uses the outside of the frame and the stx38 used a different type of lifting system. I did this to my 165 and it has been in service with this deck for about four month now and is doing fine.

Have you tried cleaning the air filter and checking the spare plug? Those are the first to things to check. Clean or replace the plug after cleaning the air filter and also the fuel filter could be dirty, replace that with a new one. They can't be cleaned

You need to know someone with a hydraulic press. The linkage has bends and all you have to do is bend them a little more which will shorten the rod. Bend a little and check the results, do this till your wheels are straight. The turn radius will be so much better. Took me less than 20 minutes.
