Actually the previous answer is not entirely accurate - The Beatles were all multi-instru mentalists (perhaps with the exception of Ringo) and whilst it is true that McCartney was the principle bass player of the band, Lennon and Harrison can both be heard on bass from time to time; Lennon most notably plonking out a very rough and barely ready bass line on the Long and Winding Road. You can hear Harrison taking responsibility for the low stuff on Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight from the Abbey Road album.

A great book for all things Beatles is Ian MacDonald's 'Revolution In The Head' which not only sets this music into some kind of social and political context, he also writes great little critiques of each song (some can get a bit heady and high brow but some are just great - his essay on Strawberry Fields is worth the price of the book alone) and not only that but he draws heavily on Mark Lewisohn's academically researched 'bible' on who did what and when during this time in his 'The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions' and summarises the key facts from that book for each song, e.g. who played what. If you are interested in The Beatles and want to know more, it's the first book you should buy (IMHO).

Throughout the early years of Beatlemania, all of the Beatles drank alcohol, either beer or their favorite, Scotch and Coke. Often they would drink before a gig as a "bracer" or afterwards to relax.

Beginning in Hamburg, Lennon took "uppers" to get through grueling long hours playing in clubs. In 1964, Bob Dylan introduced the Beatles to marijuana which became their drug of choice for a few years.

In the spring of 1965, George Harrison's friend and dentist introduced John to LSD, which Lennon claimed to have used often and regularly from 1965 through 1967. In 1968, he and Yoko snorted heroin. John also made references to cocaine in interviews without elaborating, but it sounds like he was more than casually acquainted with it. He and Yoko were busted for possession of hashish in October, 1968, but Lennon always claimed that the bust was a set-up.

In his solo years, Lennon acquired a taste for sweet drinks like Brandy Alexanders, which got him into trouble at a club. He and Harry Nilsson got drunk and heckled the Smothers Brothers during one of their performances. On another occasion, John walked around with a Kotex on his forehead. In interviews before his death, he said that he "wasn't above" smoking pot now and then.
