Doadpore Day.
On 20 October 1857 during the Indian Mutiny the forerunner to 27 (Stranges Company) Battery Royal Artillery at Doadpore lost guns of one troop to the rebels. Lieutenant T Bland Strange led a mounted charge to recover some, if not all of the guns, in which he was successful.
Thereafter on 20 October each year the battery/troop celebrated the occasion as Doadpore Day.
Between 1954 and 1956 I attended three Doadpore Day commemorations while on the posted strength of 27 Battery stationed at Far East Farm Camp, New Territories, Hong Kong.
The battery paraded for inspection by the battery commander following which the most recently arrived junior officer on parade read out the citation to the assembled battery. This was followed by various inter-troop competitions. C Troop as Champion Troop, gaining the trophy in 1955. A special lunch was held for all ranks with beer (one bottle per man)
