The Kindle is optimized for eBook reading whereas the iPad is a multifunctional device.

Amazon says that it will be caused from physical damage such as dropping it or bumping it against something. It happened to me, but it never leaves my room, so could not have suffered damage. You might be able to replace it if you have the 18 month warranty and you haven't owned for more than that time.

If you want a great E-reader, I would suggest the Kindle Fire. It is an upgraded version of the Kindle and I have heard great reviews about this. I know people who have this and I saw the apps and it is great.
