Tutankhamun was the son of Akhenaten, but was not the immediate succesor of Akhenaten. After Akhenaten died a pharaoh named Smenkhkare, who is believed to have been a younger brother of Akhenaten, may have been a co-regent of Akhenaten and ruled for a few years after his death. There is a second pharaoh who ruled between Akhenaten and Tutankhamun; Neferneferuaten, a female pharaoh whose identity is unknown. There are several theories to who she may have been; she may have been the wife and co-regent of Smenkhkare, or the daughter of Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti, or even Nefertiti herself. So the line of succession went from Akhenaten, Smenkhkare (?), Neferneferuaten (?) then Tutankhamun.

After doing much research on the subject it is still unknown to me if they were able to be deciphered prior to entrance of the tomb or not, however the ease in which modern day scholars are able to read them now that we have had the Rosetta Stone for so long would seem to indicate that Howard Carter the Archeologist responsible for the discovery most probably did......whether he chose to share that with the reputedly superstitious workers indigenous to the area......makes you think.....probably not on that one. Tutankhamen had a fairly unusual body shape it is definitely possible that he had a genetic disorder (his probable father, Akhenaten, is believed to have suffered from Froehlich's Syndrome, an endocrine disorder.

The research also showed that Tutankhamun had "a slightly cleft palate" and possibly a mild case ofscoliosis, a medical condition in which the spine is curved from side to side.
