He was originally going to be a woman, but they decided against it. According to a blog post made by Tetsuya Nomura that had been translated, Marluxia was intended to be a girl but after thinking that Xemnas wouldn't allow a female to gain a position of power in the Organization(no surprise as there is only 1 female in the whole Organization), the decided to change Marluxia into a man. however they did not change his design aside from the obvious. He remains with 'pink' hair in a common female hairstyle with the power over flowers and a pink and green scythe.

Axel is neither gay nor straight. He is a Nobody and therefore could not have feelings for anybody or anything, regardless of certain dialogue throughout the story. The feelings that Axel gains while being around or thinking about Roxas is an emphasis on the power of Sora's heart and the power of friendship.
