How do you bring in a union to your workplace?

If your employees choose to unionize, you cannot. (Unless you are the TSA and have the President declare you have no rights as an employee.) Generally, attempting to stop employees from forming or joining a union is an unlawful labor practice and can carry severe penalties against the employer.

Your best chance is simply to treat your employees in such a manner that they see a union as an unnecessary cost to them instead of seeing the union as someone that will help them fight an unreasonable and uncaring boss.

What is the difference between union and non union tradesmen?

UNION tradesmen are workers who take pride in there work .They are part of an apprentice program that teaches the proper and safe way to perform on a job in a specific field ,such as plumbing or electric etc.They go threw a 4-5 year schooling process to become familiar with all aspects of the trade.Through the school they become certified in numerous things such as torch operation , fire guard, scaffolds, and osha corses which allow you to work on higher profile jobs such as schools ,,power plants, filtration plants or large projects like ground zero where certifications are manditory and safety is strictly enforced...Due to this the union journey man or woman is financially compensated with a higher salary than nonunion.It is scale with the cost of living.The stereotype of union workers being lazy and slow is old news .Union jobs are large and fast pace all training and safety is necessary under these conditions .Also keep in mind brutal weather conditions while working outside during summer and winter .Nonunion workers usually get taken advantage of on the jobsite and are financially under paid.skill level is lower on nonunion jobs.....thank you for reading ....Chris De Pascale ...Plumbers local1 NYC

Why do employees need to join in trade union?

By joining a trade union, you will have strength in numbers. It will no longer be you against the company, no more waiting for the company to decide you are worth a raise or you having to beg for one. Union members get higher wages and benefits (will not have to count on Social Security). Over the years it was unions that have fought for all workers rights, not just their members (40 hour workweek, child labor laws, minimum wage, . . . and most recently the health care reform [even though most union members already have health insurance, they still fought for the rest of the American people to have coverage]). They have fought for safer working conditions (OSHA).

Why don't people like labor unions?

Obviously the bosses are against them because they'd have to share a little more of their massive profits with the people who actually do the work.

Some workers are against them because they probably don't understand what a union does, not only for unionized workers, but all workers. Also, there is a lot of anti-union propaganda in the media, since newspaper owners are themselves anti-union. There have been many abuses by unions, and this hasn't helped. While some reforms are needed, many would throw the baby out with the bathwater.

In short, it's mostly ignorance. Because of laws that were passed in the seventies and eighties that crippled unions, fewer young people nowadays have grown up with parents, friends, or relatives who are union members. They simply don't understand their importance to working people.

How do you remove a union where you work?

In order to remove a Union at your work place you must contact the National Labor Relations Board,they will have all the legal information that you would need in order to remove the union from your work place..Once you do that you will need to collect dated signatures from all employees that wish to dissolve the union,it will take on average 35-50 % of the union members signatures to dissolve the union. It can be a long legal process to remove a labor union.

However if you are in a state that has the "right to work" laws,which allow people to be employed without requiring them to joining the Union, then it is a simple matter of an employee deciding if they wish to remain a union employee or becoming a non-union employee. This done by simply signing out of the union and not paying the union dues/fees. When enough union members sign out and leave the union it will eventually dissolve itself.

What are the functions of a trade union in Trinidad and tobago?

In the broadest sense, trade unions came about as a way to protect workers after the industrial revolution in England, where they were working 12 to 14 hour days 6 days a week for whatever the company owner decided he would pay them. Which of course was as little as possible. Not that the need for trade unions was restricted to workers in England. A good read if you want to know what working conditions were like in America in the late 1800s and early 1900s would be Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, BUT BE WARNED there are some truly harrowing scenes in this book, and it's publication in the 1920s caused such an uproar that the government created the FDA in an attempt to stop the worst excesses. For a slightly gentler view of the life of the working classes around 1900 America, try Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie. You should also research the Pullman Corporation, and the Carnegie Steel empire, both of which grabbed back a good part of what little they paid in wages by forcing employees to live in filthy, unmaintained hovels in company towns, and shop at the company store where, of course, they were charged super high prices for everything. If I recall, the first of the American trade unions, and one of the first to strike, were the pullman car waiters, who were all poor blacks (and referred to, whatever his name might be, as "George"). For many Americans, all the name Henry Ford means is paying his employees enough to be able to buy one of his cars (of course, you didn't buy a Chevrolet if you worked for Ford.) The power of a union is that the union can collectively bargain for the best possible deal for all its members; not just wages, but the right to live anywhere you wanted and not just in company housing, the number of hours worked, medical benefits, and paid time off. The power of a union is also limited to the solidarity of the members, because the only thing a worker possessed was the ability to walk off the job, so it's more effective if everyone walks out and stays out together. Of course, the loss of wages for a man who was earning maybe 6 dollars a week caused huge strain on poor families, and employers had no problem hiring non-union labor to come in and work for the strikers. Ford hated the unions and was the last of the car manufacturers to recognize the right of the workers to organize. The detective agency Pinkerton's was originally created to break up strikes by Ford workers at the Dearborn plant in Michigan, and they cheerfully broke up picket lines with shotguns, billy clubs, and anything else they saw fit, all the while protected or ignored by the police. Many Americans are still prevented from organizing themselves into a union, as is evidenced by the struggle for recognition by the employees at WalMart. Other Americans do not see the need for trade unions; after all, this is America and not Russia. But when you realize that in 1920 there was no medical insurance, no paid maternity leave, no paid day off for Labor Day (ironically Labor Day is to celebrate the gains made for American workers, but of course the WalMart employees and many many others are still required to work on labor day) no paid day off for Presidents day. The right to a 5-day 40 hour workweek was not won until the 1950s. Bear in mind that ANYTHING an employer gives an employee comes directly out of his pocket. DO you think you would have all the benefits you have today if people had not given their lives to the Pinkerton thugs in Dearborn? No. You'd still be working 11 hours a day 6 days a week, with one day off for Christmas. I strongly suggest you do a lot of reading and some internet research if you want to know why you have the benefits you do (and the European benefits, which are even better than yours, because unlike Americans, most European workers did not simply walk away from trade unions (largely, of course, because of the publicity generated by the connection between the Teamsters, Jimmy Hoffa, and the Mob). That should get you started anyway. Be grateful to the unions. Phil

The man who formed the first relatively permanent labor union the Knights of Labor was?

Because of such fierce opposition from big business, much of the later labor union activity was carried on in secret. Such was the case in the organization of the first relatively permanent national labor union, the Knights of Labor, organized in 1869 in Philadelphia. Headed by Uriah S. Stephens, the union admitted all workers, regardless of skill, race, or position. The Knights of Labor sought to educate public opinion about the true situation of labor, avoiding the label given them by corporations as troublemakers being driven by greed.

What is the importance of union in a c program?

Importance of union in 'C':

unions are the concept borrowed from structures in structures we allow different datatypes in which each datatype is allocated a separate memory location .But in unions same as structures we use different data types but all the datatypes will be allocated to a single memory location and only one datatype with maximum size will be used for allocation of all the data types used in a union program.Sample code for union is as follows:

union item

{

int m;

float c;

char x;

}code;

In the above program we used three kinds of datatypes here integer size is 4 so the other data types will be shared in the same location of size 4.then the memory will not be wasted and all the memory will be utilized perfectly.
