What is the shipwreck that occurred on Lake Superior on November 10 1975?

According to Julius Wolff's authoritative The Shipwrecks of Lake Superior the first shipwreck recorded was that of the Invincible in a storm 1816 near Whitefish Point (Wolff, 11). The Invincible was employed in the fur trade by the Northwest Company, but was by no means the first European-style vessel on the Lakes. However, it seems to me that I recall reading in Grace Lee Nute's book on Lake Superior that an explorer and prospector named La Ronde had built a couple of small sailing vessels in the 1730s and that one of them sank near the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin in either the late 1730s or 40s, which would make that seventy or eighty years older that the Invincible.I hope that this helps.

Yes, but better: "Are Lake Huron, Lake Michjgan, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and Lake Superior the names of the The Great Lakes?" I was looking for a definition of 'laked', which I had guessed and found valid in a game Jamble (like Scrabble) on IYT. The misspelling in this entry distracted me from the real definitions.

How big was the biggest wave recorded on Lake Superior?

100ft waves where recorded in 1947 (unverified - gpronger 20110514)

From gpronger:

I ended up here after Googling the question. However, I am unable to verify 100 foot. The problem would be that the size of a wave is controlled by the size of the body of water (fetch) as is the period (distance between waves).

On Lake Michigan we can have a seich; which is similar to a tsunami but not due to a earthquake or underwater landslide but weather.

Waves, as best I can tell can get to around 20 feet with Lake Superior at 30 feet.

How big are the waves in Lake Superior?

Lake Superior empties into Lake Huron via the St. Marys River and the Soo Locks. Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world based on surface area (if Lakes Michigan and Huron are taken separately; see Lake Michigan-Huron), and the third largest in volume, behind Lake Baikal in Russiaand Lake Tanganyika in Africa. The Caspian Sea, while larger than Lake Superior in both surface area and volume, is brackish; though presently isolated, historically the Caspian has been repeatedly connected to and isolated from the Mediterranean via the Black Sea.

Lake Superior has a surface area of 31,700 square miles (82,103 km2), which is approximately the size of South Carolina. It has a maximum length of 350 statute miles (560 km; 300 nmi) and maximum breadth of 160 statute miles (257 km; 139 nmi). Its average depth is 80.5 fathoms (483 ft; 147 m) with a maximum depth of 222 fathoms (1,332 ft; 406 m). Lake Superior contains 2,900 cubic miles (12,100 km³) of water. There is enough water in Lake Superior to cover the entire land mass of North and South America with roughly 1 foot (30 cm) of water (roughly a depth of .93 feet) The shoreline of the lake stretches 2,726 miles (4,387 km) (including islands).
