The 1997 Land Rover Discovery (Series One / Series I) uses a coil pack that is mounted above the engine at the rear, towards the bulkhead/firewall. Each spark plug is directly connected to a single coil of the coil pack, and thus does not use a distributor.

On my 1997 Discovery trying to unlock any door other than the driver's door sets off the security alarm, so I would not count on unlocking all doors from the rear door.

A friend of mine just found out from the dealer that there is no dip stick for the transmission fluid!! Appearently, the only way to check it is to remove the plug (bolt) from the front of the transmission pan. This requires getting under the vehicle while it is kept level. The fluid must be "warm or at ambient temperature" and checked only after the shifter has been moved through all positions while your foot is on the brake. The real trick is to find a way to pump the fluid into the pan. It should be filled until the fluid runs out of the plug hole. I feel sorry for my friend because he regrets ever buying his Discovery. Remove the beading strip on the outside of the window to expose the heads of the pop rivets then drill them out. The whole unit should then become free from the metal panel.

To check the transmission fluid level , you must remove the Allen plug on the bottom of the transmission, next to the gear selector cable. On the early units, the filler plug is a rubber stopper on the very top of the transmission, which needs to be removed. On the later units, the filler plug is a 14mm hexagonal plug, which needs to be removed.

The transmission needs to be filled at a temperature between 35-40 degrees celsius, whilst the engine is running, until the fluid dribbles out of the level plug from the bottom of the transmission.

I rather suspect that your problem is a bit more than just a low fluid level.
